Necessary Roughness

Today's column for the Daily Banter is all about football and those who complain about how aggressive it is and would like to see it go away.

Here's the opening shot:

"Last week on our podcast, Bob Cesca threw out the question of whether it was a good idea for liberals to take on football and demand changes when it comes to the safety of players. He made a great point about how doping may be part of what’s creating monsters on the field so ferocious that their hits now cause permanent damage in the form of, among other things, chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Certainly keeping the game as safe as possible should be a major concern football fans, players, coaches and managers, but my reaction to Bob’s overall question was that overtly screwing around with the institution of football in America was a political and cultural third rail no sane person would get near."

"Violent ground acquisition games such as football is in fact a crypto-fascist metaphor for nuclear war."

Sorry for the movie quotes...I'm fried lately.

It will all be replaced by Sarcastaball. You just need to find your creamy center.

I lost my love of football when it became blindingly apparent to me that it was all about the money. The players, the fans (except to pay the money) and the game don't mean a damn thing to the major sports franchises anymore.

That being said, I have still payed some attention. I see two major problems when it comes to football injuries. One, you've pointed out, is players juicing up. They're bigger, faster and stronger than they used to be. The second one, I think gets overlooked: the armor. When you're decked out in a helmet and head to toe pads, braces and guards you feel indestructible. I'm speaking from experience. You don't think of what'll happen when you hit someone with the equivalent of several thousand pounds of force because you're protected and they are too. Beefing up the protection will help some and changing the rules will help some more but, I'm not sure it'll be as effective as if you took it all away and made the players think about before they drive their head into someone.

More on topic about the liberals, which I now count myself as one, I can't imagine a reality where these people think they can win in this arena. And I'll never understand the mentality of some liberals that every injury and death due to stupidity should be prevented. Children? Absolutely! People harming others (stupidity or no)? Absolutely! Adults removing themselves from the gene pool out of stupidity? Let them! They're doing the rest of us a favor. And if you sign up for boxing, football or chainsaw juggling, you knew what you were signing up for. These are three sports you are guaranteed to get hurt. The only questions are how bad, how soon and if you can get out before it's too late while still making it worth your while.
