Listening Post

Okay, so I almost never do "theme weeks" when it comes to the Listening Posts around here, but with all the discussion of what was good and bad about the 80s to come out of my little post mocking Rock of Ages, I figured it might be time to look back at some of the good.

So, yes, over the next five days I'll be highlighting just a few of my favorite songs, albums, bands and artists to come out of the 80s. I still say that, overall, 80s pop culture really was crap, but that doesn't mean there wasn't a lot of great stuff out there as long as you knew where to look.

Anyway, let's kick things off with something from Peter Gabriel's brilliant 1986 album, So -- which you admittedly didn't have to look very hard for.

This is Red Rain.

You couldn't go wrong with any Peter Gabriel.

I would have gone this way though.

Admittedly I had fun watching "We are the 80's" on VH-1 having been an 80's High School graduate. Which, let me say, was kinda cool considering the Breakfast Club came out while I was in High School...that is a sort of blessing methinks.

Wow... how often do I agree with Skelton?!

Not that "Red Rain" isn't a phenomenal track. Because it absolutely, utterly is.

I remember a friend loaning me "So" on cassette back in my high school days. I had some distaste towards "Sledgehammer" at the time, but my friend insisted I give the album a listen. I popped it into my Walkman, listened to 'Red Rain" and felt my head explode.

I immediately re-wound the cassette and listened to it again. I did this several times before moving on the the rest of the album.

Very nice. I know you like Punk, Chez. How about some old school Bad Religion next?? Maybe something from Suffer or Back to the Known. You can't go wrong with Bad Religion (the actual song, the Theme Song.)

I celebrate Bad Religion's entire catalog, so agreed with above.
