This Means War(?)

My latest piece for the Daily Banter is now up -- it deals with the almost unimaginable massacre in Syria last week and what should be done about it.

Here's the opening shot:

"They say you should never make a decision when you’re angry and maybe it’s best to heed that advice. And yet I can’t help but think that anger — uniform, global outrage that feels like the wrath of almighty God — is what’s required at this moment."

The BBC Radio 4 programs I listen to give daily updates about what is going on in Syria, and it is horrific. It has been for a long time, and the reports coming out of Homs and Derra are similar; though there was far less intentional aggression against women and children. What really makes me sick is how al-Assad continues to insist that it is "roving groups of armed terrorists seeking to undermine the regime" behind these attacks. You start to wonder if he actually believes this crap, or if he could even stop what he has started if he tried now. I have a feeling he is losing his grip on his military and it is way beyond his ability to put a stop to. That being said, someone needs to drop a daisy cutter on the army masses while they're shelling civilians. That way, you make sure you're getting them red-handed.

Fuck that. We should stay out of it.

Going back to Iraq 1, the US has fought, almost exclusively, to free Muslims from oppression and tyranny. Afghanistan, Somalia, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya.

In return, they hate us even more every time.

Fuck them. The Arab world can solve it's own problems.

I feel like a giant dick for saying that, but at some point we have to recognize reality. Arab Muslim people hate the west. They hate us. They hate that we treat gay people with dignity. They hate that we don't stone women to death for the crime of being raped. They hate that we let women drive cars and go to universities. They hate that we stop them from committing genocide against the Jews and destroying Israel. They hate that we allow religious freedom.

They aren't worth our blood. They aren't worth our treasure.

Heather --

According to this report on NPR's Planet Money, al-Assad is firmly in charge of his military, for the simple reason that the higher ranks are occupied almost exclusively by members of his extended family.

As one of the intereviewees in the piece said, "The al-Assad family has been preparing for this uprising for the past 40 years."

Oh Villemar, you're so cute in a douche bag kind of way.

Of course I'm being facetious, which I would think would be evident to anyone who wasn't a Greenwaldian.
