Listening Post

Donnie Iris has the distinction of being one of the ugliest guys to ever become a mid-level rock star. Ugly or not, though -- and one look at him and it's really obvious he changed his name from something outrageously Italian -- he made some damn good power-pop back in the late 70s and early 80s.

This song is still one of my favorites.

It's Ah! Leah!

Culottes? Really? And hey, dweeb, ya might want to lose the bow tie. Then again, for all I know, that might have been the look that got all the girls back in the day. My memories that far back are a little foggy.

But holy crap, what a kick-ass song.

I still own this 45. One of my top 5 songs of all-time. My 10-year old is trying to learn it on his guitar.

One of my favorite songs of all time. And Chez, (you probably know this) Donnie was a member of The Jaggerz, who had the hit "The Rapper" back in the early 70's. What you may not know is that he was also in La Flavour a, ahem, disco group in the early 80's that had one hit, "Mandolay".

Growing up near Pittsburgh means this was required listening during the 80's, and probably still is today.

I goofed. Iris was not in La Flavour. Robert Parisi of Wild Cherry fame was in La Flavour...Iris and Parisi played together for a time in Wild Cherry. Sorry, blame it on 80's hangover...

Great choice!

We're fortunate in St. Louis to have a kick ass cover band that does this song. Always the highlight of the night.

I had no idea a song that rocked this well could have come from a nerd like him.

I don't think he's ugly. He just needed to see an orthodontist. Repeatedly. Heck, in England he'd be handsome.

Sweet. I can remember when the song was on the charts. 1980. When I was fourteen. Thanks for posting such good music, Chez.
