A Storied Life
He had been held against his will in Libya, dodged bombs in Iraq and been shot in Ramallah. And through it all, he brought to life some of the most stirring and vital accounts of years of tumult in the Middle East that you could read anywhere -- which is why he was awarded the Pulitzer not once but twice.
Yesterday, the intrepid Anthony Shadid -- reporting for the New York Times -- died of an asthma attack while covering the popular uprising and the government's punishing response to it in Syria.
He was 43-years-old.
If you're not familiar with Shadid's life and work, you really should be.
