Little pet peeve of mine I thought of while listening to the broadcast...

The Japanese Atomic bombing saved a LOT of lives. Not just American, but also a tremendous number of Japanese civilians. The Japanese military had brief the Emperor just prior to the planned US invasion that they were prepared for 9 million casualties on their side being required to force the US to negotiate. At the time, the Japanese military had 2.5 million personnel at their disposal. The remaining millions would be made up of armed and unarmed civilians, forced marched into the landing areas of the Americans.

Operation Downfall is one of the least understood aspects of WWII, especially from the Japanese perspective because for whatever reason, its not discussed in the US. Hell, the Japanese had to stop a military coup to prevent the Army from continuing the war even after the two bombings.

Sorry, whenever I hear people treat the atomic bombings as something that just happened without serious consideration is insulting to the people involved. Not saying you guys were...I just run into the whole notion that "Japan was already defeated" all the time and its not accurate at all to the military situation at the time.
