Listening Post

Well, get ready to party like it's 1984 -- and make of this entire effort what you will. There's something reassuring about Duran Duran -- who've admittedly aged very well, certainly without looking too desperate or cartoonish -- returning basically to their heyday by casting a bunch of 80s supermodel glamazons for the ten-minute, Jonas Ã…kerlund-helmed video for their new single, Girl Panic!

The first few things you notice about the clip are, a) they somehow got Naomi Campbell to sit in one place for a total of four minutes without throwing a phone at someone, b) you can totally see Eva Herzigova actually writing the crap lyrics Nick Rhodes churns out, and c) damn it must be fun being Duran Duran.

Here's Girl Panic!

As much as I enjoyed some of the eye candy, I have to admit I would have settled for a better song. ::sigh:: Yeah, it must be fun to be in Duran Duran, but creatively it's been mostly downhill since that first awesome record all those years ago. If they're going for callbacks to those glory days, I think it would be swell if they went back to the New Romantic sci-fi stuff instead of the excessive glamour schtick; I mean, I don't get to hang out all day on a set packed with supermodels in lingerie and fetish wear, I just have to listen to the songs thinking they're not as good as they could be and then periodically try to defend the band's old stuff from naysayers. Seems kind of like I'm getting the shit end of that deal, y'know?
