As I was watching the video, I couldn't shake the feeling that these girls owed something to The Raveonettes in their sound and image. When I went to iTunes to see how much the album would cost me, I saw this: "It's perfect synergy to have Richard Gottehrer and The Raveonettes' Sune Rose Wagner producing Dum Dum Girls' big studio record."Ah hah! Damn I'm good.To be fair, they're pretty good, too.
Chez, I love your blog, I listen to the podcast every week, and in general I think of you as a fellow soldier in the battle against fuckingassholia. But your taste in music is so bad...You were right about Fishbone, and I loved that 2-part post. But the rest...it don't got no alibi.
While I very much appreciate your patronage, as they say, do you have any idea how silly it is to rail against the music someone likes? There's no way to not look like an arrogant hipster doing it.
the new bangles CD is quite good... surprisingly so. i winced when i first heard they had a new album out thinking that, like the go-gos, they should be done... but as i said, it is surprising. and susannah hoffs still has that gorgeous voice.
One reason and one reason only: Matthew Sweet. With him producing they could do no wrong.
Oh, and while it's nowhere near as good as the original, I really like their cover of Todd Rundgren and the Nazz's Open My Eyes.
I've got three kids, two of them in their teens--"hipster" can only be applied to me ironically. No comment on "arrogant." And to be fair, "Mistadobalina" was also a good post.
Then you should know better. Music is subjective. There's nothing I could ever gain by telling you that I don't like your taste in music -- it's not going to change that taste one bit. All it's going to do is make me look stupid because I feel the need to express my disapproval at, again, something completely subjective. It's the ultimate form of talking just to hear yourself talk. Thanks for reading -- but it's a ridiculous comment to make because in the end it's completely toothless.
I'd say it would make me look obnoxious, not stupid, but point taken. And in fact neither was my goal. As is probably obvious, I didn't like "Bedroom Eyes." In fact I disliked it so much that I found myself getting annoyed, and while I could have and should have just stopped the video, part of my brain kept reminding me of the Fishbone post and using it to argue that the song had to get better. Of course it didn't, so I made my comment. Sorry for targeting you rather than the Dum Dum Girls, but in the end the comment served its purpose--it was therapeutic (and I'd argue that therapy is actually THE ultimate form of talking to hear yourself talk).
