Cutting Room

Two weekends ago, when I was in New York City to pick up Inara, I went out for beers with Mary Beth Williams. For those who haven't been paying attention, she's become one of my favorite people in the world -- and her piece in Salon today is close to my heart because I happen to have a very serious thing for very short hair on women.

Maybe it's the quirkiness, the tough-chick masculinity or the fact that it just makes her stand out -- or maybe it puts me in touch with the latent queer inside me dying to get out -- but the willingness to go short says that a woman has fire, and it's sexy as hell.

And yes, I like to think that an appreciation of a woman with short hair says something about a guy -- other than, like I said, the fact that he's probably secretly gay.

I find it depends highly on the woman's head.

Now that you finished giggling, I shall continue.

Some women just have the right structure for short hair. Halle Berry looks dynamite with it. Natalie Portman looks like she has a wig on whenever she goes long. It ain't right.

Of course,m it also depends on the style. The borderline buzzcut type isn't for everyone.

My wife's hair has been short since soon after our son was born. I've never had a problem with it being short.

When Carey Mulligan cut her hair, it made my lust for her even greater.

I've always had long hair, and while I think I'm confident already, it takes a lot of confidence (and let's be honest, good bone structure) to really pull it off. I've wanted to go short before, but deep down I know I am way too lazy to do anything to my hair. Short hair just always seems super high-maintenance for someone like me, who, uh, doesn't even comb her hair in the morning since I shower at night...

To me, some women can pull off a short haircut (Morena Baccarin) and others can't. It also depends on whether there is some thought put into it or it's just an "I'm busy, get it out of the way."

I too go completely bonkers for short haired women.

I'm the only one of my friends who's like that. They all like it long, long, long. Bleh.

damn i needed to read this today.

ive worn a pixie (or some variation thereof) since i was about 16. im 35 now. i remember coming home from getting my first short cut and having my very southern father tell me that it looked horrible and id never get a a man with that hair cut.

fortunately, ive found a few fellows over the years who rather liked it.

i have to admit though that i wouldnt mind turning on the tv once in a while and seeing someone who looked like me.

@em -

Actually, short hair is quite easy to "do". I have a choppy pixie cut and all I do is rub some pomade in it and I'm set.

Count me among the men who like the short cut. I didn't think I actually liked it until I fell madly in love with a woman who cut her hair in such a manner. Upon reflection, I think I like it because I like to be able to see a woman's neck and ears. I think it's for those reasons that I'm also very fond of the good ole ponytail.

So I guess, ladies, we're out here :) You just have to find us.

I second and third what the other short haired ladies have to say about ease....I let it dry naturally and then put some styling gel and cest finis!

I've had my hair alternately very long (down past my waist) and then very short several times in my life. I've always liked the way it looks short better. But I hear from men all the time, I like long hair. If I had a nickel for every time I have heard that.....

I'm finally at a point where I just don't give sh*t what guys think. If they can't love all of me, short hair and all, screw em--or not as the case may be ;)

I read an intriguing research paper in college Anthropology class. The basic conclusion of this paper was that men were genetically and instinctively predisposed toward long hair. The reason was that long hair showed a woman's long-term health and suitability as a breeding partner.

It struck me at the time as a pretty good hypothesis and it's stuck with me since.

Sorry to put it in such stark terms. Anthropology is not a touchy-feely science. ;-)

Count me in! Love short hair on a woman. Just didn't realize it made me potentially secretly latently gay. I guess I can live with that.

It probably just makes me gay. Actually, what makes me gay, I'd imagine, is the fact that I love the cock.

You might have mentioned that earlier.

Really.
