Yes We Cancer

Morning at the Moffitt Cancer Center, Tampa, Florida: The waiting room, where Central Florida's infirmed 60-somethings gather to be mesmerized by Fox News Channel. I'd like to assume that the choice of Fox is one purposely aimed at making you long for the relative comfort of cancer surgery or the potential release of death, but I know that it's really just a measure of the network's popularity in these parts.

Breast cancer isn't a disease for misanthropes, loners, or anyone who generally appreciates subtlety. If you're really into pink, though, this is the cancer for you.

Flight 8283 now boarding in OR 15. Enjoy your flight and have a nice day.

My mother is now out of surgery. It was successful.

It's a good day so far.

Here's hoping your mum pulls through completely, Chez.

When things happen to ourselves, we push through, ignore, deal with it, joke about it, and generally just move along hoping for the best. When things happen to our FAMILY, it becomes an entirely different world of worry and stress. At least, that how it is for me.

I hope things continue to go in a positive direction for you mom. Good luck, brother.

glad to hear the surgery went well. hope all the rest goes well too. Let your mom know random strangers that read your blog are thinking of her and hoping for a swift recovery.

Congrats!

(so...do they still do the tattoo thing in follow-up? you know, for accuracy?)

Oy. The one-two punch of things that really fucking suck: cancer and Fox News.

Glad your mom came through surgery okay, Chez. You're both in my thoughts.

I know you are relieved that this part is over. AND that it was successful. Been thinking about you, sweetie.

Best wishes for your mom. She can beat this, my wife just celebrated 5 years being breast cancer-free.

Good luck to her. The journey is probably just beginning, but this is a great start.

I'm glad to hear that. I've been wondering how she was doing.

Moffitt is a bizarre place, isn't it? That waiting room was the strangest experience of my life. Are the puzzles still there? I found that the weirdest of all. Your airplane analogy is spot on, though. I never made that connection.

And just so that you don't think too badly of us here in the Bay area, not all of us watch Fox News. I can vouch for, oh, at least a dozen of us who are smarter than that.

So happy to hear your mom is out of surgery. Please continue to keep us posted.

What lakelady said: Let your Mom know that there's a whole bunch of people in this world who are thinking about her tonight.

Set in motion, simply by past memories, my initial reaction was a good premonition.

To behave politely toward this sensitive situation, I expressed it with code words like, "good sign" to telegraph it.

Now, this latest good sign brings back memories of the feeling of relief, years ago, upon hearing of the best possible outcome.
