Quote of the Day

"Those people in the Republican primary have got to lay off of this stuff. If they want to lose, this is the game for losers."

-- Televangelist Pat Robertson, warning the GOP presidential candidates about taking extremist positions like an embrace of birtherism

Wow.

When the guy who claims that gays and abortion doctors were to blame for 9/11, and Katrina and the Haiti earthquake were acts of divine vengeance says you're being too extreme -- you're officially six rungs up from crazy.

Somebody pointed out—and I think he's probably right—that what he's really saying here is that the GOP candidates "need to not go there until after they get elected" for fear of scaring off moderates and independents. He isn't expressing any actual disagreement with those extreme positions.

Pat Robertson as the voice of reason?

It's too bad that he didn't call out the Texas fire as being punishment from God for putting an innocent man to death for arson. I suppose it's just a test and not divine irony.

O.K. I'll admit it. Unless there's a photo, I always get Pat Robertson and Pat Buchanan mixed up. Then I forgive myself because it really doesn't make all that much difference. It's just a matter of coming at the crazy from a slightly different angle.

I agree with Mark. We are talking about an individual who advocating the assassination of Hugo Chavez. A man who gave the advice to abandon a spouse with Alzheimer on his national TV broadcast (dear god I would love to hear the theological justification for THAT!). And while Harold Camping is in the news for being a jackass harping the end of days and making a shitload of money doing it, Old Pat here pretty much cut his teeth in the 80's doing the same damn thing.

There is no way in hell this guy is advocating the GOP become less extreme...they got to just sell it better.

Shorter Pat: "I can get away with saying crap like that because my audience agrees with me 100 percent. But at some point you guys are going to have to convince at least a few sane people to vote for you, so STFU."
