Listening Post

There's no other group quite like Battles. They're an ultra-experimental alt-math-rock powerhouse, propelled by a crapload of imagination and by musicianship that's practically mind-boggling in its virtuosity. Nowhere is this latter fact more true than in the case of the man providing the beat that drives the band, John Stanier, who's probably the most ferocious drummer in alternative music right now.

In the words of Nicki Minaj, the guy is a motherfucking monster.

Seriously, just listen to this song, from Battles' brand new album. It features Gary Numan on vocals and probably the single best drum track -- in sound, complexity and all-out fire -- on anything you'll hear this year.

Here's the aptly titled My Machine.

Finally, a band we can agree on. I love this, even though I sometimes wish John Stanier would get back together with Page Hamilton and give Helmet another go.
