Hard Out

The big news-that's-making-the-news over at CNN right now is that network anchor Don Lemon has apparently come out of the closet. Obviously, if this is something he felt like he wanted or needed to do -- as opposed to being forced to, which he wasn't -- then I commend the hell out of him. Really, kudos on Lemon's willingness to be who he is and I hope it provides an example for others who may be grappling with their sexuality or who feel as if coming out will leave them at the mercy of the ridicule of others. Even in this day and age, incomprehensibly, it takes courage to come out, so Lemon deserves respect on this.

One question, though: Didn't Lemon also reveal not long ago that he was molested by a man when he was young?

I'm not in the mood to look up the research -- and I'm certainly not implying that everyone who's gay was molested -- but does anyone know the facts on the connection between molestation at a young age and homosexuality? I believe pretty strongly in the "born this way" theory but is it possible that someone can be "turned" -- to use surprisingly appropriate vampire lingo -- or do male pedophiles prey on boys who, even as kids, give off some kind of "vibe" (which seems ridiculous, given that pedophelia is about power more than any sort of sexual orientation)?

Lemon's back-story just sounds all too familiar.

Yes, I'm too lazy this morning to type in "Google." Do the heavy lifting for me.

I hate to bring up utterly horrid statistics to prove a point, but go to this page and read the data...

Basically even if there were a casual link between homosexuality later in life and sexual abuse as a child...there would be a lot more homosexuals. I really don't know how to take that either a good thing (kind of shitty to think that ever homosexual was the result of a horrible crime) or a really...REALLY horrific thing (Holy shit we rape A LOT of our kids).

Note: I am assuming that 3.5% of the US population is gay/lesbian/transgender. Hell...even at 10% of the population, my argument still stands.

i believe the statistics on the Catholic church will prove no connection. not all abused boys turned into Priests.

Zing! Although you're conflating gay and child molester, which the Republican party would like to thank you for.

I'm a woman. I was raped when I was 4 by a man (stranger). This experience did not make me gay.

...however I would gladly consider it if Rachel Maddow ever came on to me :)

I don't think there's a causal connection between molestation at an early age and homosexuality. I do think that being homosexual means creating a bit more vulnerability in a person at an early age (just because there is a very large section of society that is against it), meaning that it may be easier to prey upon them. After all, if an adult is willing to "accept" you just the way you are, you're more likely to fall for it, just like any other kid.

I'm kind of disappointed that you would bring this up as discussion, but then, I have to balance that with the fact that you were honestly curious.

How is it possible that you didn't entitle this post, "The Lemon Song" ?

*kanye sighs; hangs head; wonders what this country's coming to*

I would've titled the post "A Lemon Party".

Don't Google can never unsee it.

I'm well aware of Lemon Party. I listen to Opie and Anthony.

And I was actually going to go with "Jizz Lemon" but I figured that would be tasteless.
