Quote of the Day

"As America girds itself for another round of lunatic political infighting over which barely-respirating social program or urgently necessary federal agency must have their budgets permanently sacrificed to the cause of billionaires being able to keep their third boats in the water, it's important to point out just how scarce money isn't in certain corners of the public-spending universe. In the coming months, when you watch Republican congressional stooges play out the desperate comedy of solving America's deficit problems by making fewer photocopies of proposed bills, or by taking an ax to budgetary shrubberies like NPR or the SEC, remember Christy Mack and her fancy new carriage house. There is no belt-tightening on the other side of the tracks. Just a free lunch that never ends."

-- Matt Taibbi, in a new Rolling Stone piece called "The Real Housewives of Wall Street"

Sometimes I resent Matt Taibbi.

On the one hand, I appreciate learning and understanding the sorts of things he often writes about. On the other hand, just once I'd like to read something he writes that doesn't make me burn with a white hot rage.

Just once could he do an in-depth look at whether puppies or kittens are more cuddly?

Ignorance is bliss, but this rat bastard Taibbi keeps goading me into learning things I wish I could stay in the dark about.

I just finished his Griftopia, it's a book-long, 30-40 year version of exactly this crap.

Griftopia is really brilliant. It's his best work, easily.

Chez: I've only read his RS articles before this book. I was really impressed with this one, it's difficult to be angry and coherent for that long, but he manages it brilliantly. Now I'm just hoping that anger takes hold of others in a useful fashion, rather than being distracted by America's Next Top Millionaire Jackass Survivor.
