Assistants To the Quote of the Day

"A child of wealth, he is more at home with the immigrants and the lower-middle-class strivers, who share his straightforward belief in the Gospel of Success, than he is among members of the haute bourgeoisie, who are above it. Like many swashbuckler capitalists, he is essentially anti-elitist. Trump is no joke... (he is) the living, walking personification of the Gospel of Success."

-- David Brooks on Donald Trump

"Brooks is like a stalker who isn’t ashamed to be caught wearing just a t-shirt and stroking his dong outside some starlet’s window, only the starlet in this case is the whole class of rich Wall Street douchebags he’s spent his whole life worshipping."

-- Matt Taibbi on David Brooks

I live and work in the nether regions of white-trash-atopia. Thousands of miles geographically and light years economically from Brooks or Trump. When I first read Brooks comments on Trump, I hated to say it - but I agreed with him. Call it the power of reality TV or an unintentionally ironic admiration of his grotesque parody but he is inexplicably popular among working class people who have absolutely nothing in common with him. My only explanation can be is that with their limited grasp of the English language and stunted education they are unable to determine that 'The Donald' is completely full of shit. The only consolation I have is knowing that he shares the same pedestal as the Kardashians and Richard Hatch.

A child of wealth who is more at home with immigrants and lower-middle class? Does this guy have any idea what he's actually saying and what the word he is using actually mean? Or is he just stringing together a series of complimentary phrases to blow happiness and sunshine up Trump's ass, hoping for a reach-around?

Trump is a Longshoreman thug scammer desperately trying to be a white-collar con-artist desperately trying to look like an 8O's Pretty Woman corporate raider. He could just as easily fit in running a shell-game on the docks as making casino's and hotels go bankrupt. He always makes me think of the mobster in movies who tries to use big words to sound more intelligent and educated, only managing to mangle the language and look like an idiot. You can dress a thug in Armani, but it won't give him any sophistication, style or class... he'll just be a thug dressed in Armani. The kind of guy who has his lawyer buy him wine and doesn't care what, as long as it's something appropriate to his tax bracket. *

Or am I totally wrong about this?

* line stolen from a 1989 issue of Uncanny -Men, used without permission, by Chris Claremont. But it just fit so perfectly I couldn't resist.

On another web site I read someone pointed out that Donald Trump is the alternate timeline Biff from Back to the Future 2.

Ah, remember the good old days when running a business into bankruptcy was a bad thing? The Donald has done it three times now. Let's hear from his stranded creditors.

On the other hand, as white-trash chronicler Joe Bageant has said, never underestimate the will of white trash to vote against its own self interest.

But yes, David Brooks is a douchebag.

Anonymous @ 8:09: Brooks didn’t say the immigrants and low level strivers respect Trump, he said Trump is more comfortable spending time amongst such people. Now if you believe Trump spends his Saturday nights in bowling alleys in New Jersey Brooks has a point. If not, Brooks is, as usual, full of shit.
