Listening Post

Fever Ray's self-titled debut album is one of the most haunting, mesmerizing and challenging musical experiences of the last few years -- and it's also one of the most vastly rewarding.

Here now, the first two tracks from that album. Above it's If I Had a Heart; below, When I Grow Up.

The movie might suck, but 'the wolf' from that Red Riding Hood soundtrack is intensely cool.

The Good Natured did a great cover of When I Grow Up, I ended up preferring it to the original.

... I should have mentioned 'the wolf' is also a Fever Ray song.

Very, very cool. Last time I found a "new" band on your site that I loved instantly was Keane. Thanks!

Bah I was thinking of a sufjan stevens song, I meant the when I grow up cover by first aid kit, it's lovely. Completely different feel to it but nice.

Yeah, thanks to Red Riding Hood everyone will now know about Fever Ray. Fair enough, I guess. Their stuff was made for movie soundtracks.

Chez--

The fact that you now feature ads on your site doesn't bother me in any idealistic way (good on you, in fact), but the design and user experience has taken a hit as a result. You have a ton of white space to the right of both the content and the ads; meanwhile, the right-hand sidebar encroaches heavily on the main text, the column width of which has been reduced to a headache-inducing margin. Seven or so words per line for the main text is way too narrow to read comfortably for any stretch of time. You should have the Daily Banter guys streamline the display.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks, Josh. It's still a work in progress. I agree about the layout and it'll be changing soon.

I have been listening to them non-stop since you posted this. There's something about music like this that manages to reach into parts of me that I just cannot define or describe with words. Primal? Otherwordly? Organic? Sensual? They just don't suffice.
