Quote of the Day

"Dear Ryan Murphy, let it go. See a therapist, get a manicure, buy a new bra. Zip your lip and focus on educating 7yr olds how to say fuck."

-- Kings of Leon drummer Nathan Followill responding to Glee creator Ryan Murphy's public fit following the band's decision not to license its music for use in the show

Basically, Kings of Leon politely declined Murphy's request for the rights to Use Somebody, saying that they rarely license their stuff to anyone.

Murphy responded by saying, "Fuck you, Kings of Leon," and calling them "assholes" during a magazine interview.

Because the world needs fewer pissy queen clichés.

Ryan Murphy acted like a bitch and Followill called him out for being exactly that.

Predictably, all the shrill cries of "homophobia" erupted from all the do-gooding fucking nannies who think God died and left them in charge of what we can say.

Fuck them.

And by the way, as you point out it's KOL's fucking song. If they don't want their stuff on Glee, that's fine.

Murphy shouldn't get his panties in a bunch.

Kings of Leon do have a history of being prima donnas, and Caleb Followill has been known to do his best Axel Rose impersonation and throw hissy fits both on and off stage. So I am going to remain skeptical that they "politely" declined and that was that.

That's not to say Kings of Leon don't have every right to decline. And that Ryan Murphy isn't a drama queen.

I'm pretty sick of the whole notion that Glee should be a role model for young kids. I'm no uptight conservative by any means, but I don't think the behavior of the characters on that show, buy the kids and the adults (two cheerleaders "scissoring", simulated masturbation, faked pregnancy, teen pregnancy, cruel behavior, etc.), is what we should be pointing to young children to aspire to. I understand that's not the point of the show, but do we honestly believe a 7 yr old kid is gonna get the nuances and irony of Jane Lynch's performance or understand the lessons they are supposed to learn?

I second Steven D Skelton's opinion.

Agreed. I was really disappointed that HuffPo was in the ranks of the nannies with "homophobic" in their headline for the article detailing the incident. They totally got it wrong on this one.

Actually, while I agree with you about the prima donna thing, Jonah -- several outlets are reporting that Kings of Leon were pretty cool about the initial request, but just said no. Murphy, meanwhile, went all bitchy queen on everyone.

Wait, what? They have scissoring cheerleaders on that show?

Huh. Murphy said that all they want to do is turn kids on to music. I must have missed that in the sea of AutoTune.

I'm trying to figure out if Ryan Murphy is a bit of a bully.

Chez - Why can't you just say "angry" or "unreasonable?" I find it weird that because Murphy's gay AND being an asshole, he's simply going "all bitchy queen."

Nobody has mentioned the fact that KOL's music is not the type of music Glee even does--at all.

But I watch Glee. It's fun for me and I'm still the kid that sings with a hairbrush in her bedroom. Albeit to "Blitzkreig Bop", but still...

I'm having flashbacks to that quaint era when licensing a tune for a commercial was the moral equivelent of clubbing a baby seal.

I kind of miss those days.

And the whole Glee thing went from "Huh, interesting and kind of subversive" to "Justin Bieber is guesting! OMG!" in a depressingly short order. It was always tougher than "Lost" to sustain, and Murphy is probably feeling that acutely right now and acting out.

Fuck Glee. That show is fucking terrible to begin with. Hack artists do a good enough job butchering songs under the label of "cover" without it being broadcast on national television.

Chez said...

Joe, there's a special brand of behavior he's exhibiting -- and yes, it's being a stereotypical bitchy queen.

I don't see the homophobia here at all. It's KOL's song and they didn't want them to use it (or, have fucking Gwyneth Paltrow cover it). And yeah - he's being a queen. If he were just being "angry" or "unreasonable", he would have stopped at "Fuck you, KOL". Instead, he went to go on and blabber on with some bullshit about how Glee "at its heart" gets kids into music. That kind of sanctimonious bullshit? = drama queen. That title applies to both genders.

If there are scissoring cheerleaders on the actual show I can't wait for the porn parody.

Liked Glee the first year then jumped a big shark and stopped watching.

I sometimes think I'd like to watch one of the musical numbers, for the talents at work, so I stop channel-hopping for a minute; every single time, I get completely embarrassed by the production values.

Glee gives me the creeps, like a world designed by Disney.
