Picture of the Week

From an official letter written in 1997 by the Vatican and issued to the bishops of Ireland, who at the time had proposed a new policy of reporting abusive priests to law enforcement. The basic translation: the Vatican is insisting that the current policy stay in place -- that the bishops keep cases of sexual abuses to themselves and within the church.

Evil fuckers.

This is not particularily surprising considering that corruption in the Catholic church has been rampant since its inception.

Of course it's not surprising. It is, however, fucking disgusting -- especially since millions still inexplicably buy into the nonsense peddled by the Vatican.

I sort of look at large religious institutions like I do big business. I expect them to be corrupt as hell and I don't look to them for much real nuts-and-bolts guidance (re: spirituality/morality in the first case and economics/social justice in the second case).

So, I guess this means that keeping his part in child sex abuse cover-ups under wraps won't be John Paul II second miracle to quality him for sainthood.

But yes, sick as all hell, given that the innocent were being (and still are) sacrificed to the institution.

Well, we do need to give SOME credit to those who tried to get it out into the open and report it to the cops. There were at least some people trying to do the right thing. But the one's at the top stopped them. Just like in any organization, crap floats to the top. Those who have the drive to succeed and take charge usually also have the ruthlessness to not care what laws they have to break and what people they have to hurt to get their power and keep it.

They're not a church, they're a well organized pedophilia ring which operates with near impunity by exploiting the weakness and fear of humans across the globe.

Evil only barely covers it.

This kind of thing makes more sense when you remember that the Vatican isn't just the place where the Pope lives, but it's also the government of a sovereign nation; that those in charge don't think as clergy, but rather as government officials.

They don't like covering up for child rapers, but it's in the best interest of the state that they do so, and so they do it. It really is the most practical and pragmatic solution to the problem.

Of course, it doesn't hurt that absolution is never more that three "Our Fathers" and two "Hail Marys" away.

Not millions, Chez you're thinking way too small. It's Billions Chez, 2.2 Billion Catholics, fully one third the population of the Earth.

Eliminating problems such as child abuse and neglect in one third the world's population would take a miracle for any Police force in any country.

Catholocism is a nation, not some tiny religious tax exempt institution sponsored in the 501c tradition of the United States, to legally officiate marriages, (and sometimes picket) funerals, and other spiritual matters.

"Evil fuckers"? Well, sort of.

I was recently in Malta and found myself mesmerized by the Caravaggio painting, "The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist" - the one who baptized Jesus and later pissed off Salome so much that she asked Harrod for his head and immediately got it - and came to feel that Harrod's lack of liberal weeping for every pathos played out before him, and his decisiveness and efficiency is . . . maybe . . . refreshing.

So yeah, down with the Church and up with the new Harrods . . .

That's an understatement.

There's no justice on this earth for these "people".

To Anon 6:31.

I was recently at Auschwitz and found myself mesmerized by the careful craftmanship of the iron scroll above the entrance and I was fascinated by the Nazi's sheer will and determination to get shit done regardless of the consequences.

So I thought, yeah, humanity is such a drag on productivity. So down with Church and up with the douche bag assholes that can so easily put events in the context of history. Go shit in your hat (but with civility, of course).
