While You Were Out

I'm still relatively incommunicado at the moment, meaning that the only computer and internet access I have is through my Android (which is what's generating this little update). That said, I didn't want to wait to acknowledge what so many of you already know by now and have e-mailed me the details of: Late yesterday, CNN fired Rick Sanchez, a guy who, despite his somewhat polarizing personality, remains a good friend of mine. Regardless of my history with Sanchez, I'm not one for pulling my punches when it comes to evaluating a news item involving the media -- so I promise that I'll have quite a bit to say about Sanchez's offending comments and CNN's decision to fire him tomorrow.

For now, though, off to the pool and some kind of fruity drink. Stay gold, kids.

(Update 2: First thing tomorrow morning, I pinky swear.)

(Update: I'm now back home but unfortunately I have some work that absolutely can't wait -- which means that the piece on Sanchez will have to wait until tomorrow. I'll hopefully have it up in the morning, but if not, tomorrow night at the latest. Thanks for being understanding.)

this is pretty weak. CNN danced around the fact that they fired him in their article posted on their site.

"Atlanta, Georgia (CNN) -- CNN anchor Rick Sanchez abruptly left the network Friday afternoon, just one day after making controversial comments on a satellite radio program."

I just figure CNN figured out that you don't screw with Jon Stewart.

First "Crossfire," now Sanchez.

Well, your reprint of your excellent hurricane story doesn't shine the best light on the dude when he was a Miami local news anchor, either!

I've read that he was pissed that he didn't get the permanent 8pm timeslot. I guess CNN wanted to have the saner show versus Olbermann and O'Reilly.

His inappropriate hyperactivity and willingness to highlight his own ignorance (see Daily Show clip) just didn't seem like a good fit on CNN at any time of the day.

Since he's Chez's friend, I assume he's more talented and intelligent than he comes across, and not a complete asshole.

HuffPo seems to be hiring, and from all over the place. Maybe Rick can fit in there somewhere, though I'd keep him far away from Howard Fineman!

You go on vacation, Chez...

And now Rick, has a multiple Imus moment,
and goes on a permanent vacation?

Is that just a coincidence?

Don't worry about Rick. He'll find a new map to squat over soon.

@toastie: Just because he is Chez's friend does not rule out the possibility of Sanchez being an asshole. I don't see Chez having a problem with that. (Sorry Chez.)

Though I do agree that talentless and stupid are safe to rule out.
