So I was traveling yesterday, which meant that I was reading USA Today (it's unavoidable!). Al Neuharth had a column opining the lack of a Walter Cronkite for this generation (w.r.t. the war in Afghanistan). Ignoring for the moment whether it is possible in the era of media fragmentation for any one figure to command an equivalent level of attention, I'd argue that Jon Stewart (or possibly Rachel Maddow) is Cronkite's philosophical heir in that regard. I'm not sure which fact is sadder: that Stewart is largely disregarded for being on Comedy Central, or that Comedy Central is home to our leading voice(s) of political rectitude.
