Roman Holiday

Staggering. Just staggering.

The New York Daily News: Roman Polanski Will Not Be Extradited to U.S./7.12.10

Bernard-Henri Lévy, that pompous little turd, gloats via a pious and condescending essay reprinted at HuffPo in 3... 2... 1...

I'm not gloating Chez, but I predicted this would happen. This was always about twisting the Swiss' arm regarding Switzerland's largest bank, UBS, the IRS and the unprecedented laws that have been passed by the Swiss Parliament. Polanski was a simple pawn in this game and the US could really give two fucks if a fugitive continues to live the high life in France (or the rest of Europe).

There were certainly other factors at play behind the scenes -- but from a strictly legal perspective, as well as right-vs-wrong, it's ridiculous.

Baagh.
In the online poll, only 27% of respondents believe that he should be punished.
This boggles the mind.

"I ask only to be treated fairly like anyone else," Polanski said in May, as officials spent months pondering his fate.

To be treated fairly like anyone else? For drugging and raping a 13 year old? Anyone else would have been locked up immediately.

"It's something that happened many years ago ... he has suffered, he has not been allowed to go to the United States. He was embarrassed by the whole thing"
-Woody Allen

Yeah, poor Polanski suffered horribly for what he did. Fuck you, Woody Allen.

Woody Allen fucked his unadopted step-daughter then married her.
Why is anyone reaching out to him for his expert opinion?

A youthful error? Yes, perhaps.
But he's been punished for this lapse--
For decades exiled from LA
He knows, as he wakes up each day,
He'll miss the movers and the shakers.
He'll never get to see the Lakers.
For just one old and small mischance,
He has to live in Paris, France.
He's suffered slurs and other stuff.
Has he not suffered quite enough?
How can these people get so riled?
He only raped a single child.

Why make him into some Darth Vader
For sodomizing one eighth grader?
This man is brilliant, that's for sure--
Authentically, a film auteur.
He gets awards that are his due.
He knows important people, too--
Important people just like us.
And we know how to make a fuss.
Celebrities would just be fools
To play by little people's rules.
So Roman's banner we unfurl.
He only raped one little girl.

I'm right with you Tabi. I don't get that just because the guy is talented we should forgive his breaking the law. I have friends that keep saying, "It was years ago..." as if that makes up for anything. Talent, time or "embarrassment" do not make up for the fact that he drugged and sodomized a 13 year-old girl.

"The Swiss government said it had sought confidential testimony given on Jan. 26 by Roger Gunson, the Los Angeles attorney in charge of the original prosecution against Polanski. Washington rejected the request."

Could this be our fuckup?

Well, as far as I'm concerned, this means its fair game to go to Switzerland and rape their teenage girls.

Who's with me?

Chez said...

No, Michael, because the details of the case are, quite frankly, none of Switzerland's business. The extradition rule is simple: If someone broke the law in a country you share an extradition treaty with, and you arrest that person and are confident you have the right person -- meaning the man or woman that country believes committed the crime -- you turn him or her over. I've said this since the very beginning: The details of the case -- whether Polanski got a raw deal or not -- are completely irrelevant. He was convicted and he ran because he didn't want to face it and believed that he shouldn't have to.

Votar...FYI, the age of consent in Switzerland is 16...doesn't mean you can go around raping them, but if you like em youngish, you've got a non-jailbait chance here in Switz.

Chez said...

He won't be able to respond. He's busy packing.

Tabi said...

Alanna- Because they know he will say something favorable about the decision. Also, with his personal history I guess he is somewhat of an expert on the topic of sex with teenagers.

Chris said...

This is messed up. He should come back and face the music; he'd have been out by now if he hadn't have run in the first place.

Woody Allen had an affair with and then married a woman who was of legal age and was not related to him except by legal fiction. That makes him neither incestuous nor pedophiliac.

Woody Allen has been, for many years, a titanic dick, but let's hate him for the right reasons.

The poem was great, but according to actress Chsrlotte Lewis, among others, it wasn't just one little girl. Is my buddy Woody referring to his retroactive suffering in the Holocaust and later at the hands of the Manson gang? That he raped little girls because he had suffered in the past? Woody Allen is a titanic dick, Roman Polanski is a monster. Some of his supporters also say that because her stage mother dropped her off at Jack Nicolson's pool alone with Polanski, she tacitly gave her child to him in exchange for acting jobs for the child, and thus it was somehow a fair exchange. Or because the poor woman herself doesn't want to be reminded in public AGAIN, that it would be polite for her sake to just forget it.

I say an eye for an eye in this situation. Perhaps, for a fair price, Michael Clarke Duncan can ass-rape Polanski and we'll all call it a wash. Besides, I mean, Malibu really needs another saggy ball-bagger in its cliffs.
