Quote of the Day

"Many psychologists and psychiatrists have demonstrated that there is no relation between celibacy and pedophilia. But many others have demonstrated, I have been told recently, that there is a relation between homosexuality and pedophilia. That is true. That is the problem."

-- Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican's second-in-command

My favorite part of this quote is the amusingly vague "I have been told recently" line. Because when you're talking about a guy who believes he's in direct communication with God, you've got to wonder who exactly "told" him.

To her credit, Mary Elizabeth Williams over at Salon has put together a quick primer on the ongoing whack-a-mole-like game of deflection the Catholic Church has engaged in over the past several weeks -- the litany of boogeymen it's trotted out in an effort to deflect attention away from the real culprits behind the priest child molestation scandal.

He must have seen "Boys Beware". If you haven't had the pleasure, here is a link. This was shown to junior high kids back in the 50s & 60s.

Man - talk about pulling something out of your ASS in order to twist it into your pre-determined belief system.

"God told me - it must be true!"

First part: fine (Everything I've read agreess with this statement...pedophilia is not really higher in the priesthood vs. the regular population...it's just that they are priests! They should be held to a higher standard!).

Second part: FOAD

To repeat my FB post...You force a man into celibacy in some sort of sadistic way to preserve their relationship with God (oh the cleanliness, that's right!) and this is what manifests. Altar boys literally become God's Glory holes.

The whole "direct correlation of homosexuality to pedophelia" is such a gross deflection - as if the strawman himself was set on fire and there was nothing left to grasp but a crow's feather - so deplorable to the point where it makes me sick.

Maddow did a pretty good takedown of the homos-are-pedophiles meme recently, sorry I don't have the link. Why do people in authority think they can just pull stuff out of their ass? I mean, besides the fact that our media is allergic to fact checking.

You'd think an organization that has as much experience in deceiving and manipulating the public as the Catholic church does could come up with a better strategy than 'throw something out there and see what sticks'.

Well, I suppose if the powers that be will let Glenn Beck pull shit entirely out of his ass, I shouldn't be surprised that the Vatican would take the chance to strike out at gays AND deflect blame with randomly made up "facts."

Chez in part said, 'you've got to wonder who exactly "told" him.'

Chez, why have I got to wonder who exactly are those many others? By those I mean those who are not psychologists and psychiatrists, but have recently told Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone that they have demonstrated.

Wait a sec. So their admitting to allowing the dirty, evil gays into their fold as a means of defending their nutty concept of forced celibacy?

They must be missing their proverbial foot by now with how many times they've shot themselves in it.

Celibacy means no sexual relation between anyone. A sexual relation of any kind between anyone puts an end to a state of celibacy.
So, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone logic is sound.
