Thanks. I am terrified of scary movies. I will not get a decent nights sleep for weeks.
oh the humanity!
This is brilliant. "The Music of Nightmares" indeed. So many animated production logos, combined with weird synthesizer sounds struck fear in the hearts of many. Hell, even PBS with its side profile face was unsettling, combined with the music that sounds both menacing and depressing. There are video compilations all over youtube where the words "Scary" "Production" "Logo" and "Childhood" appear:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAFR7_HNQZAhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OT4OVqyYKMhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3C4cZx0bD0QPlenty of these logos creeped me out as a child. Perhaps that's why I am in design now. It is a way to control childhood fears. I don't deal with any of the animated logos, mind you... not ready to plunge full on into the pit. I work in static images. Safe immersion. When frisbee-wielding Ubu came along, it was a breath of fresh air. A picture of a dog, a command from his owner, and the dog's bark. Nice simple. Clean. Friendly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klG9G4BDLtAOne more for the road... a mix of warm glowing warming glow, and possible danger:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEPf9BIf_hM
Not entirely related, but to this day the theme song from "Taxi" still unsettles me.As a kid I found it downright scary, but now, just somber and depressing.
I had a real problem with those "Please Stand By" or "Technical Difficulties" slates. I think it just creeped me out that a) something had caused a television station's signal to shut down (at least that's how I interpreted it), and b) suddenly everything in the house got uncharacteristically silent.
Chez, you aren't the only one: http://schwa242.livejournal.com/669878.html?thread=4305590#t4305590
The white screen of death at the end of VHS tapes terrified me as a kid. It was the monotone shriek blasted at full volume and that weird shade of white on screen. For a similar reason, the off-the-hook sound from phones bothers me.
Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo, it's working, it's working... How do you know, how do you know? I saw the last scene... I saw the last scene...I guess Micky Dolenz was onto something.
That S from hell is one funny fella.
