Comedy Clubbed

Although comics can occasionally be as petty and vindictive as anyone else in show business -- their venom made more potent by the ability to express it through acerbic humor -- most generally shy away from publicly beating up on each other (to say nothing of beating up on comedic talk show hosts who can occasionally help make or break their careers). This is understandable, but it's kind of a cop-out -- which is what makes this clip of Patton Oswalt on Comedy Death Ray Radio so startling. He makes it perfectly clear whose side he's on in the Conan-Leno battle, comparing Jay Leno to Richard Nixon in terms of his at-all-costs drive for self-preservation.

But Patton's main issue with Jay Leno is an obvious one for any comic worth his salt -- and it's the same issue I always bring up when I talk with people about Leno: The fact is that Jay Leno used to be one of the funniest stand-ups around; the guy was hilarious. But as Patton so perfectly points out, somewhere along the line Leno "willfully threw that switch off and went, 'No more for you guys. Now this.'"

I get that Leno -- even though he's a comedian who continues to bust his ass both on TV and in the clubs -- probably considers the toning down of his material to have been a necessary and worthwhile trade-off given the kind of lifestyle his Tonight Show shtick afforded him. But it really is sad when you think about how unbelievably funny this guy used to let himself be -- not so much cutting edge or more willing to offend, just genuinely funny -- versus how tedious and bland his TV humor has become.

It's a really terrific clip: a fascinating little window into the mind of a truly gifted comedic talent -- a look at the way guys like that think about their craft -- as well as a vigorous overall argument for why Conan should stay put and Leno shouldn't.

This "Funny Jay Leno" you speak of... is he myth? ...as a young'in person, I have never heard of him.

What I love about Patton is that after the Disney voice work and the name recognition, you feared that he might have to start watching his words a bit to keep the overlords happy -- but he's remained his own surgically sharp self, not only in commentary of others and the industry he's in, but in his material as well.

Big Fan hits DVD very soon, and speaking as someone who lives in a town that never got the chance to screen that film, I for one can't wait.

In the 80s, I went to see Leno live three or four times. Somewhere I may still have VCR tape of the 5+ Letterman shows he did. I've told people the same thing, "No, really, he used to be hilarious!". It never fails to lose me respect and cred. Thank you for stating all this; I'm no longer feel alone in this crazy world.

I never minded him becoming unfunny in order to earn incredible wealth. I'd do the same in a heartbeat. But, it sure doesn't mean I have to watch it.

Jay Leno is a HUGE prick and I couldn't be happier that Patton is calling him out. Jay should simply retire and let Conan continue hosting the Tonight Show. Seriously! Jay has no soul! I really feel sorry for Conan. Also...I just heard that Conan is leaving NBC because he doesn't want to threaten the integrity of The Tonight Show by moving its timeslot to 12:00AM. JAY CAN GO TO HELL!

Ha that's funny at the end where Scott says to Patton, oh but you're on Jay Leno next week...right? Ba dump bump. Aukerman FTW!

I know I'll get some guff for this... but what exacttly did Leno do wrong? He sat there while NBC gave away his spot, even though he was overperforming, and he didn't grumble.

He was always much, much funnier than Letterman (proven by his ratings), and NBC screwed this up royaly.

Conan, for his part, could have gone to another network, but took a job from a well-performing comedian. Therefore, when he gets shitty results, he should absolutely fear for his job - and the better performing comedian should not get the job back?

Huh?

Bill Hicks' words echo still the same today as they did back in the 90s.

Bill Hicks pulled Jay Leno's card back in the early 90s. Fuck this Doritos schilling wash up.

Give Conan a lead in show that isn't in dead last in the ratings (The Jay Leno Show, which is pretty much his old Tonight Show in half hour form), and it might have helped his ratings just a bit.

The Tonight Show with Conan has been 10x better than it ever was with Jay, and most anybody under the age of 65, that has bothered to flip over from the other channel the were most likely watching, will agree with that (and of course the Late Show is 10x worse with Jimmy Fallon, but that's another story). It isn't dry, bland and boring anymore. It feels new and actually makes you laugh (I don't think I ever laughed at the show with Jay hosting even once. not a chuckle)

Conan was pretty much set up to fail (probably not intentionally), and wasn't really given a chance to succeed. Like Patton said, no one watched when he took over at Late Night, but he was given some time and ended up winning people over and created a huge following.

He just puts on a funny and interesting show, and if given a chance to succeed, I'm sure it would have... but that's over now, and Jay will most likely be taking back over. More of the same dull and bland humor that's been the hallmark of Leno shows (I swear he's one step away from saying "take my wife, please!"). And since he won't have a Lead In show that's in last place (because let's face it, they'd be hard pressed to find something worse than the Jay Leno show), he will probably reap the benefits, and Conan will have to find another network.

Hmm...how are you going to take guff for a comment when you don't even identify yourself? Cowardice.

I can't even respond to it because it would take me hours to respond to the tidal wave of ignorance and incapacity for understanding you unleashed. Plus I don't care about you at all so I wont waste my wisdom on you.

I just hope the same thing happens to you at your job, get a promotion because another employee that has the position you want takes on new responsibility, then it turns out he sucks at it so...sorry we are bumping you back to your old position and salary.

Leno is the dingleberry that NBC needs to have shorn from its ass

Too bad the clip got nuked. Thanks, genius, for doing a copyright-takedown on a clip you can DOWNLOAD FOR FREE FROM THE FUCKING COMEDY DEATH-RAY PODCAST.

It's been decided by my goombahs and me - we're breaking Leno's legs and crushing his larynx

I think Jay's problem is that anyone who found him funny has to go to bed early now so they can wake up at 5 am and do laps around the mall. Once your core demographic gets too old to stay up and watch your unfunny ass you are kind of painted in a corner. Walk away Jay.

It's easy for someone who has never been given the opportunities Leno was given to criticize. Give me a break, you can either stay "true" to your art and have to work the rest of your life or edit yourself a bit and retire 40 years before everyone else.
I'm sorry, but the people who get ahead are the ones who learn how to work within the system... I don't endorse completely selling yourself out but staying true and working till the day you die is only appealing for so long.
