Listening Post

Somebody had the brilliant idea to set the Shuggie Otis classic Strawberry Letter 23 (and yes, it was Shuggie who did it first, not the Brothers Johnson) to a video from British trip-hop duo Lemon Jelly.

The result is pure magic.

One of my favorites. Perfect for a summer drive up the NY Thruway. Boards of Canada draw inspiration from this.

Is there anything about you that isn't cool, Alanna?

Oh yes, plenty. Just ask my ex.

What a co-inky-dink that I just happened to re-watch Jackie Brown this week, where Tarantino had the foresight to include this tune while Samuel L. Jackson was "doing in" Chris Tucker. (Too bad that life doesn't always imitate art!!!)

Rarely does a remake eclipse the original in every way, but I got to go with the Brothers Johnson version as the better one. Not as campy and much more soulful.

But what do I know... I'm just another anonymous a-hole.
