The Palin Trap 2: A Fork In the Rogue

I hate to post two Taibbi columns in one day, but Jesus is this brilliant. Just a dead-on assessment from his new piece over at True/Slant:

"What the people who are flipping out about the treatment of Palin should be asking themselves is what it means when it’s not just jerks like us but everybody piling on against Palin. For those of you who can’t connect the dots, I’ll tell you what it means. It means she’s been cut loose. It means that all five of the families have given the okay to this hit job, including even the mainstream Republican leaders. You teabaggers are in the process of being marginalized by your own ostensible party leaders in exactly the same way the anti-war crowd was abandoned by the Democratic party elders in the earlier part of this decade. Like the antiwar left, you have been deemed a threat to your own party’s 'winnability.'

And do you know what that means? That means that just as the antiwar crowd spent years being painted by the national press as weepy, unpatriotic pussies whose enthusiastic support is toxic to any serious presidential aspirant, so too will all of you afternoon-radio ignoramuses who seem bent on spending the next three years kicking and screaming your way up the eternal asshole of white resentment now find yourself and your political champions painted as knee-jerk loonies whose rabid irrationality is undeserving of the political center. And yes, that’s me saying that, but I’ve always been saying that, not just about Palin but about George Bush and all your other moron-heroes.

What’s different now is who else is saying it. You had these people eating out of the palms of your hands (remember what it was like in the Dixie Chicks days?). Now they’re all drawing horns and Groucho mustaches on your heroes, and rapidly transitioning you from your previous political kingmaking role in the real world to a new role as a giant captive entertainment demographic that exists solely to be manipulated for ratings and ad revenue. What you should be asking yourself is why this is happening to you. Even I don’t know the answer to that question, but honestly, I don’t really care. All I know is that I find it extremely funny."

Honestly, this is a fascinating read:

(This time it's an otter. Look at him -- he's saying, "Hi!" Cute, cute, cute!)

Shit! I don't have any river otter nor any sea otter material at the ready. Too hard to find a way to wittily connect the shattering of shellfish on one's belly using rocks to the implosion of the neo-con-nutwings.

Oh, well, I can't win with every cute fuzzy animal. Someone else will have to pick up my slack.

Palin is / was an unqualified, obscure, ambitious politico who was thrust into the national spotlight, much like most of the candidates for President.

But what is is about her that neccessitaes 50% of your recent posts are about her?

Don't dismiss that fact as some coincidence, and that you are providing some public service pointing out how "stupid" her supporters are.

Seriously. I give a rat's butt about this lady who, if left to her own devices, would rate no more than 40% popular vote, max.

Why do you insist on giving her some much of your time?

In English, please.

One significant difference worthy of note:
The anti-war crowd, although most certainly cut loose and marginalized, were eventually proven correct. I doubt such a fate awaits those who stand steadfast with Palin.

An interesting, if tortuous thought experiment: Should it come full circle, and Palin rides some vast wave of ignorance to "Serious Contender", who will play the role of Liz Cheney, continuing to defend the Palin bashers in the face of the facts?
I know you'll be there, Chez...and I will...but like pounding oneself in the head with a ball peen hammer, at some point it just feels better when you stop.

Stop? Piffle. I'll NEVER stop. Being right never feels better than when it's against the tide.
(I recommend using the ball end of the's faster).

Still with the crowd who insist that the ugly anti-Obama rhetoric is no different than the hideous anti-Bush yammering by the libruls during W's reign of constitution shredding terror...the simple fact remains: The anti-war crowd had the FACTS on their side.
It is of little consequence to say that both sides were shrill. It is of consequence to say ONE side was RIGHT.

So what you're saying is an incoherent, cacophonous, hick jugband of teabaggers led by a border-line retard (who's willing to sell off the last of his (in this case her) legacy for a shot at the prize) are gonna be raped by the Riverbottom Nightmare Band come the 2012 talent show?

Unlike Anonymous @ 10:07, I'll go on the record...and agree with him/her. Palin is getting an awful lot of screen time 'round these parts.

The more you talk about her, the more she doesn't go the hell away.

Low-hanging fruit. She's easy content.

The problem is that decent stuff keeps coming out about her. The Taibbi piece was really good and, well, the new interview video I actually think is important for people to see.

Best quote in the piece:

"The press corps that is bashing her skull in right now is the same one that hyped that WMD horseshit for like four solid years and pom-pommed America to war with Iraq over the screeching objections of the entire planet."

Chez, have you ever thought about writing a book about this? You are, after all, in a perfect place to write about this. You were in the middle of "the press corps" right through one of the most interesting periods in recent history, are now out of the press, and are in a perfect position to comment on the media's tendency to push the story that THEY like rather than the story that actually happened.

That'd be a *hell* of an interesting book, particularly with your brand of snark stamped on it.

I wasn't closely associated with the on-the-ground election coverage -- meaning that in 2000 I was in Los Angeles and in 2004 I was in a control room in Atlanta. Still, there's definitely a story about what the press gives you versus what the story really is -- the various factors that can subtly and sometimes not-so-subtly influence the direction of the news you see.

Jester said...

Yep. I'm not talking about elections specifically. I'm talking about things like missing-blonde-white-girl-of-the-week, Afghanistan, or any of the hundreds of stories you were involved in while a news producer.

In 1983 I stayed at the Ottery Tourist Inn in Colombo 4, Sri Lanka and the Otsal Guest House in Leh, Ladakh, India. Down the street from the Ottery Tourist Inn was the Maldives Embassy. The U.S. Peace Core later occupied the Ottery Tourist Inn. That's it for my non-Animal House otter stories. For your next Palin story honor the sacred cows of India and post a photo of some udders!
