Quote of the Week (Honorable Mention)

"Of course it's accepted on behalf of young women, like my daughters, who hope men who 'joke' about public displays of sexual exploitation of girls will soon evolve."

-- Sarah Palin, finally accepting David Letterman's apology and ending our long national nightmare

Right, joking about teenage girls is positively Neanderthal, but knocking them up is apparently A-OK. By the way, I thought Sarah Palin didn't believe in evolution.

Nice one, Chez!

A nagging thought: Palin thought Letterman was talking about her 14 year old, not her 18 year old. Because it was her 14 year old at the game with her. However...

What kind of narcissist would assume that either David Letterman or the American Public at Large would know which daughter went with Sarah Palin to a motherfucking Yankees game? Palin assumes everybody knew, or that we should have known. What the fucking fuck? Does she really see herself as that important?

What am I saying. Of course she does.

(Y'see, Sarah, the child about whom the joke was clearly aimed was the one we got to see all across newspapers and the television -- the one with the history of unfortunate pregnancies. We, the American People at Large, don't know anything about your 14 year old, thus preventing her from being a target of jokes. She doesn't even have a particularly silly name. Your family isn't sufficiently fascinating or important for us to keep track of them all, nor are you. Everyone watching Letterman knew exactly which daughter he was joking about, because we follow the news -- not you.)

In other news, Palin now believes in evolution...

Let's hope this is the end of the David Letterman - Sarah Palin feud. While last week Letterman apologized, it was in a snarky sort of way, and wasn't accepted by Palin...

Evolution, joke! BURN.

Good thing she is not exploiting her kids for political purposes.

This was such a prefabricated response.

While all kids of public figures should be off limits (life's decision fuck-ups included), Palin is clearly exploiting this for her own gain.

Broading the issue to include all women? Seriously, how transparent.

If they were truly upset, the fight would not have been public.

Chez, you are ROYALLY pissing up my tree.

How fucking spineless and pissant can you be?

Joking about Sarah Palin's teenage daughter, Bristol, would be off limits ONLY if SARAH PALIN were not stumping her all over the country as the FAMILYVALUES POSTER CHILD!

The phony outrage over this contorted rape joke...
It was Willow at the game. SO WHAT?
That it extracted an apology from a COMEDIAN, in the wake of a thousand similar jokes...
The blithering indignant outrage from a yammering horde of angry rage-aholics, ALL primed and ready to move on the SLIGHTEST whiff of "WHAT?!?!? CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE!?!?!?! THAT'S WRONG!!!!!

Sarah Palin has, by accusing DAVID LETTERMAN of being a pedophile - "...wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman." - BY ACCUSING Letterman of being a PEDOPHILE...
By intentionally casting her own daughter as the subject or rape imagery, and using THAT to attack David Letterman in spiteful retaliation for ALL those horrible jokes about BRISTOL over those many months...

Jesus Lifting Fuck! Chez!
I'm willing to BET Sarah Palin was intentionally switching the daughters up...just WAITING for SOMEONE to make one goddamn "knocked up joke" when Bristol had an alibi!
How long had that grasping, craven, manipulative, calculating little wannabe been suffering jokes about Bristol? How long had she been having her nose rubbed in her Holier-Than-Thou patently obvious abstinence only hypocrisy? The subject of JOKES!!!
Chez. Come on. Imagine if you and your daughter were the targets. Even if, and maybe ESPECIALLY IF the jokes cut close to truth, the way they're supposed to.
Sarah Palin was SEETHING.

This whole fucking thing was a set up.
And now who fights for women?

Will Sarah Palin now apologize to David Letterman for suggesting that he was a threat to children?

Rather a discreditable thing to do, isn't it. After contorting logic into a pretzel to INSIST that your daughter was the subject of a rape joke, to DIRECTLY ALLEGE that someone is a pedophile?

There is NO LIMIT on the ways Sarah Palin will exploit her children for personal advantage.
SHE cast her daughter in rape imagery. Not Letterman.

Which returns me to the point (and I apologize for my length...as I say far too infrequently)...

Joking about Bristol Palin and the associated abstinence only hypocrisy is ABSOLUTELY the proper subject of satire and comedic rebuke. In fact, the rebuke ought not stop with mere laughter but go much further, into SERIOUS and THOUGHTFUL rejection. But leave that aside...

Were Willow Palin to turn up next month, pregnant by the paint huffing son of the local turkey geeker, is it now...by some Grand Comedic Fiat...to be The Subject of Which May NOT Be Made Sport?

BULLSHIT!!!

Yep, I just felt my eyes cross and the steam come out my ears.

Talk about disingenuous and exploitative.

Funny! Yeah, the only thing I actually heard her say the whole time she was talking was "evolve" to which I then thought to myself "Did Sarah Palin actually just say Evolve?"

Just how low is David Letterman's self-esteem? The man is a TV legend and an American institution; there is no reason he should be humbling himself before the likes of Sarah Palin. I think he lost more respect for apologizing to her than he did for the joke he made about Bristol. After all, if Gov. Shit-kicker can make him back down, who won't he bend over for?

Joking about raping fourteen year olds: Bad.

Making REAL rape victims pay for their own evidence kits: perfectly OK.

Vermillion said...

So does this mean that the 14-year -old is going to become a spokesperson for rape crimes now? Or bad jokes?

I mean, that seems to be the trend here. The traumatized little whelp* has to go around making a mockery of the very cause she is supposed to promote. It is a thing now.

Just so this whole thing won't be a total waste of time (and not for any....prurient reasons), I sure hope Gina Gershon does another joke vid. Yum.

*Yes, Sarah, I AM TALKING ABOUT THE YOUNGER ONE. BRING IT ON.

(It ain't my site)

I have to say - and I actually CANNOT BELIEVE I AM ABOUT TO SAY THIS - that I am sort of *gulp* impressed? with Palin's stance. I was at first ready to roll my eyes at her... but then I read the transcripts of what was said - on both sides - from a few sources, and I have to agree. She's (God save me), right. There has always been this sort of slant against women. It's SO acceptable though, it is the status quo. There have been numerous studies about the subtle portrayal of violence against women in the media and advertising (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILyr_jBDzGE), etc. YES, you are right, her teenaged Daughter Bristol was knocked up... but by another teen, not a much older man. I know Letterman wasn't hoping/wishing for anything like that - and he is totally free to make cracks like that - but we can't be so blind as to how all these comments add up. Imagine if it was your kid. I don't blame her for calling him out and trying to change the dialog.

Now I have to go wash my brain out with soap.

Also, I'm pleased to see Jean Kilbourne is keeping the lecture series, “Killing Us Softly” going and updating it. If you've never seen any - I think it's worth googling (some are on YouTube). It's long, but I remember being totally shocked when I saw one of her lectures in high school, by some of the shit advertisers get away with ("If your date won't listen to reason - try a Harvey Wallbanger" ?) I’ll admit the gap is narrowing between the genders, but there’s still a way to go.

Gabby said...

omg, sorry for the multiple posts but a friend just pointed out the old ad campaign was for velvet hammer. "If your date won't listen to reason - try a velvet hammer".

Which sounds even worse. But just wanted to be accurate.

Vermillion said...

I don't blame her for calling him out and trying to change the dialog.

That does sound nice...until you look at her target again. If this really was a "last straw" situation, why did she only focus on that one joke out of the multitude? Why did this particular instance need to be highlighted, especially since it really wasn't that funny?

It isn't like folks weren't making jokes at her daughter's expense before this. And she certainly wasn't trying to "change the dialog" when she was selling her Housewife/Dominatrix persona during the campaign season. She was more than willing to perpetuate the sexist nonsense until a time came where she could at all indignant.

And as Ref reminded us, for someone who is so progressive about the portrayal of violence in media, she seems to be kinda shaky on the same violence in the real world.

Gabby said...

Who knows why she chose *now*. Maybe because she was a hell of a lot more busy when those other comments were made... or maybe because they focused more on Bristol and so when the focus moved to the younger daughter (whether he honestly confused the two girls or not, who knows, but she saw it as being directed to the younger girl) she snapped and had had enough... or maybe because, yes, this is a way for her to get her face on TV.

Either way I don't think her rationale matters or that she is out of line, because, ultimately: the chronic sexualization of all things female is a good point to make.
