Listening Post

One of those rare covers that's actually better than the original.

Here's Fiona Apple, doing Across the Universe.

Hot damn, I love me some Fiona.

Nice version. Personally, though, I prefer Rufus Wainwright's version. The harmonies are just gorgeous. I have a version in my collection that's just the guitars--no drums--that I prefer to the video I've linked, but this will have to do.

By chance I heard the original this morning, and I must disagree.
It's not my favorite Beatle song, (I find it a bit whiny) but the original version sounds better.

But, "de gustibus non est disputandum", so what do I know.

Ah, this has been one of my favorite tracks for a long time! Tried to karaoke this version once and ended up not pulling it off at all.

It doesn't work anymore :(

That's gorgeous. The girlcrush that I had on Fiona Apple when I was 19 has returned full-force.

And of course by "it" I meant my internet connection.....

While I there's no doubt that it's a good rendition, I just can't agree that it's better than the Beatles.

I'm obsessed with her version of "Why Try To Change Me Now?" It's like the song's never been done before when I listen to it.

I swear she is the somehow the granddaughter of Ella Fitzgerald or something. Such soul!

As long as Fiona sings, great, but the minute she starts pontificating about some random thing bothering her I tune her out. Why do recording artists (and actors) feel that their opinion carries extra weight? The ability to sing a song well or act in a particular scene well doesn't equate to brilliance in any other field.

Why do politicians feel that their opinion carries extra weight? Why do YOU feel that YOUR opinion carries extra weight?

Don't even try to tell me that if you didn't have a public audience to tell your ideas to that you would pass it up. Everyone has as much right to express their opinion as much as anyone else. I get really tired of people griping about "celebrities foisting their opinions on us" when they damn well know that they'd do the same ting if they were famous.

Hell, this entire site is based on Chez telling us his opinion. And you read it.

Perhaps one of the best Beatles covers ever, but I can't say it's better than the original.
