Mother-in-Lawless

Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.

Anchorage Daily News: Bristol Palin's Future Mother-in-Law Arrested on Drug Charges/12.19.08

So let's see -- a pregnant teenage daughter, a self-proclaimed "fuckin' redneck" future son-in-law and his busted-for-drugs mother.

Sarah Palin's supporters were right: She's just like them.

I like "16-year-old unmarried pregnant daughter," as if it's all fine and dandy if the pregnant 16-year-old is married (This is not a criticism of you, Chez, more of the press in general for accepting this very strange premise.)

I can't imagine a scenario where I'd want my daughter married at 16. Even if she got pregnant by a man and they wanted to be together and raise the baby I wouldn't want them to marry that young. Marriage is really tough for smart adults with lots of experiences and plenty of resources. I can't imagine what it's like for a couple of scared teens with a baby. A lot of people who get married young do so because they think it will fix or stabilize their relationship, but I don't think it does. I think it just makes things that much tougher if/when they fall apart. Getting married in reaction to having a baby is an unhealthy social construction. Yeah you should work extra hard on the relationship for the sake of the kid(s), but the underlying relationship needs to be strong enough and healthy enough to support a marriage.

Oh, and in reaction to the story at hand, it's only interesting because of how hard Sarah Palin pushed her "perfect" family as a qualification for leadership. Plenty of other politicians have black sheep in the family (Roger Clinton anyone?) and it doesn't reflect on them. This only reflects on Palin because she wants to pretend she's part of a Norman Rockwell painting, and subtly imply that those of us who aren't are somehow inferior/less 'truly' American. There are VERY few Norman Rockwell style families. Maybe Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee have them, but interestingly enough they didn't really use those as campaign planks (Huckabee used his own marriage as an exemplar when it came to marriage in general, but that's fine. It wasn't a qualification for leadership.) I think those who want to exploit the Rockwell image are much less likely to have the Rockwell reality.

Isn't she 17, the article says she's 18

You're absolutely right. My fault. It's changed to "teenage."

Mike Huckabee at least doesn't have a Norman Rockwell family - his son was kicked out of the Boy Scouts at 17 for killing a stray dog, and was arrested last year for trying to bring a loaded gun onto an airplane.

Does Sarah Palin's teenage daughter getting knocked up by the son of a drug addict say anything about her ability as a politician? Of course not. It says volumes, however, about her attempts to legislate what is and isn't a family, and the same goes for Mike Huckabee and anyone else who wants to claim moral superiority.
