TVNewser is reporting that two more high-profile members of the CNN staff have been handed their walking papers -- and to be honest, I have mixed emotions about this one.
On the one hand, it would seem to once again prove what I've been saying for the past few weeks -- what came to a head last Wednesday with the layoffs that sent Miles O'Brien and the entire CNN Science and Technology Unit packing: Contrary to the horseshit being shoveled by Jon "Diddy" Klein, the economy is having a serious effect on CNN. Add to that the fact that one of the two staffers who's been let go is the talented and gorgeous Jennifer Eccleston -- CNN's international correspondent based in Rome -- and you'd think it would be tough to find a silver lining in all of this.
Except that there sort of is one -- in the form of an object lesson.
That's because the second CNN staffer being laid-off is American Morning's living-doll internet correspondent, Veronica De La Cruz. To put a very fine point on it, De La Cruz never should've been hired in the first place; she's little more than a pretty face (unlike Eccleston who has brains to go with her looks) and represents the furthest thing from what CNN purports to be about. Klein probably knew almost right off that bat that he'd made a mistake by hiring her so he bounced her around from place to place and buttressed her with smart producers -- Alex Walker, who was let go last week, being one of them -- likely hoping that she would catch up and become more than just a walking head shot. She never did, apparently -- so Klein finally gave up and pulled the plug.
The thing is, he could've had someone better all along.
Guess who he let go of just a year-and-a-half ago to make room for brand new internet correspondent Veronica De La Cruz?
Jacki Schechner.

Jacki needs to enable anonymous commenting on her blog.
I keep wanting to make comments there but I am denied every time.

Chez:
The one thing Klein will never do is admit he's made a mistake. I'm sure he's the kind of person who is always right even when he's wrong but when it's wrong it's someone else's fault, not his.
He's also the kind of person who lies like a rug but thinks he's telling the truth, it's everyone else who is lying even if you have emails to back up what you say.
And he's the kind of person who will lie to your face about things you haven't done and interfere in people's lives(as now proven by them lying to Miles face along with what happened to me) but you can't defend yourself because he's the big shot running the empire, doesn't matter that he's bat shit crazy and you are just a nobody.
Klein is an evil asshole who deserves to get the worst cancer in the world and suffer for years and years with it and even that's too good for him.
I'm interested in your opinion about the whole Tribune Co. going under, especially their news parts.
I work in newspaper and I feel like I'm just watching lava come to my feet in this industry.
Chez, you are basically saying that you disagree with Jacki's opinion on Veronica's beauty.
Which one of you is wrong ?
Do you realy care who thinks she's attractive or why? Honestly?
She's decent looking. Not really my type but I can see where others would fall at her feet. The bottom line is that Jon Klein likely thought she was gorgeous, which I truly believe is the main reason he hired her. Once again, I'm not saying she's utterly brainless, just that unfortunately Klein wasn't interested in anything other than her looks and hoped that they would be enough the carrot that leads the horse.
She is more than decent looking, and she isn't anywhere near brainless. Klein had no idea what to do with her - they never put her in a spot that matched her talents. His problem. She will do great somewhere else.
