"We can't be lulled into complacency. You have to remember that Adolf Hitler was elected in a democratic Germany. I'm not comparing him to Adolf Hitler. What I'm saying is there is the potential of going down that road."
-- Republican Congressman Paul Broun of Georgia (of course), referring to Barack Obama and, inadvertently, his own psychosis

Let's see if the guy has a point, what were Hitler's tactics again?
* Uniting his followers by inventing a common enemy
* Blame all that is wrong in society on certain ethnic/religious groups
* Spend a disproportionate amount of the national budget on the war industry
He's right, that DOES sound familiar! Of the Bush years...
Wow......just......wow
I guess I should not be surprised after reading some of the comments from voters in the southern states, he may actually get a ratings boost from his constituents.
It still sickens me that someone would be saying this about a President that isn't even in office yet, shows you just how much Republicans plan to "reach across the isle". They can prove me wrong by angrily condemning his statement publicly.
Wow. I remember when the Bush administration started wildly ignoring the constitution and some hardcore liberals compared him to Hitler, most moderates and definitely most conservatives cried foul. Now, all Obama had to do to get compared to Hitler (oh, all right, not compared, just tangentially referenced) was be elected...
Radical Islamist? Socailist? Fascist? Lover of infanticide?
Could the right please pick one fucking label and stick to it already...
This Georgian sadly hangs her head in shame while desperately running away from idiots like this guy. This Georgian Peach proudly voted for Obama!
Why do politicians feel the need to use Hitler's name in any context? Isn't that covered in Poli Sci 101?
This High Tech Redneck agrees w/the previous GA commenter. Not all of us dirty south residents invoke Godwin's Law.
Obama as Hitler is absolutely insane.
THAT BEING SAID. Buried deep within the appalling rhetoric is the good idea that no leader should be trusted absolutely. Even if you think Obama has good intentions and is a smart guy, surely you would cede that he is capable of making mistakes, even big catastrophic mistakes. The other branches of government do need to remain vigilant and act as a check on him, carefully examining his proposals and arguing their points of view.
Insofar as the explicit point is that no man's power should be absolute it should be well taken.
But seriously. Hitler? why go through all the effort of demonizing Franklin Roosevelt if you're just gonna whip out Hitler?
Remember when Hitler said "Even though you Jews didn't vote for me I am your leader too and I hear your voices?"
Anybody who honestly believes that Obama is going to turn this country socialist, communist, or nazi is just fucking dumb and obviously never paid attention in civics class. It will never, ever, ever happen at least not in my lifetime. AND, even if the legislative and judicial branches didn't check and balance his ass for trying the American people sure would...even the ones who voted for him.
It is covered in Poli Sci 101. It is the number one rule of debating -- first one to say "Hitler" loses. Idiots on both sides of the political spectrum, however, feel compelled to use Hitler or Nazi references whenever they want to put an exclamation point on something.
There is a time to campaign, and a time to hide out and lick your wounds. The GOP should be in the latter mode for the next couple of months until after inauguration. Obama's honeymoon is in full swing, and absolutely nothing they can say or do is going to alter that. Any attempt to dump on the honeymoon just makes you look petty, or stupid in the case of this guy. Yeah, it sucks to have to watch your opponent taking a victory lap, but that's politics.
Broun...spelt a lot like Braun...according to his own tactics, we should keep a close watch on this guy and never trust him. It's not like he's a descendant of a secret child between Hitler and Eva Braun, but you know he could be going down that road.
So Godwin's Law has been invoked on Obama already?
Ok, so you know what that means? The signal-to-noise ratio of the Conservative criticisms of our new President-Elect become such that anything they say from this point on will be senseless garbage.
But it had already been that way, so nothing's hanged, really.
PS. I've been reading a lot of old Question comics for the past few days, and now I can't help but picture you out fighting crime in a fedora and a trenchcoat whenever I come here.
...or did I just blow our cover?
"Psst. Hey man...Did you know you just Godwined your career by virtue of Dodds Corollary?"
Yeah, he's right. Hitler was elected, so elections must be dangerous. Other elections we need to keep in mind: George Washington, Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Harry Truman, JFK - it's shocking how many elections have put people in office.
We just need to be aware that Obama could go down THOSE roads, too.
Why doesn't someone just suffocate Congressman Broun in his sleep.
Actually, I don't think Hitler was ever elected. He was appointed Chancellor by Von Hindenburg, and after Von Hindenburg's death became President, then Fuhrer, no?
The Nazi party (SDAP) were elected the largest party in the Reichstag in July 1932. In the November elections of that year, they lost some seats, but remained the largest party. Throughout 1932 en the beginning of 1933 there was a powerstruggle over the control of the Weimar Republic, that was won by Adolf Hitler with his appointment (very reluctantly by Hindenburg) as Chancellor of the coalition (NSDAP and DNVP) government. This was not undemocratic since Hitler was the leader of the largest party. However, he effectively destroyed the democratic checks and balances once in power, mainly by declaring a state of emergency after the Reichstag building was set on fire on February 1933. This enabled them to suspend basic rights (including habeas corpus) and gave them complete control over all military and police resources. This is a very simplistic explanation of events, but his was effectively the beginning of the Nazi totalitarian regime.
en = and
The Reichstag fire was on Februari 28th 1933
