We've seen this all before. Heaven help us.
We should be afraid, very afraid, that there are enough nuts out there who will vote the McCain ticket and sink this country even more deeply in the muck & mire. This just scares the ever living **** out of me!
Terrifying, and not a bit surprising. The ugliness of the scared conservative is spilling over into my own family.
When my little sister sent out a notice to family members that Obama was speaking at my alma mater (Shawnee State University) in Portsmouth, Ohio, and that she wanted company for the event, she was attacked viciously by an Aunt who sent a reply to all e-mail full of lies about Obama's attachment to Freddie Mac advisors (a lie I countered with Snopes.com, one of my Aunt's favorite sources for rubbing family members noses in rumors they were "silly" enough to believe), his religious background and ties, and at the end the assertion that he "wanted to get whitee" (sic) and that "like it or not YOU are one of US!" (i.e. "You are white.")
She also said in the e-mail that an Obama presidency would help usher in the "end of days" and that if we voted for Obama we would burn in hell.
In a seperate e-mail where my sister had made a plea to the undecided voters in our circle to ponder the issues important to them, noting her two young sons and the rising cost of health care, my conservative Aunt responed to all that the reason she was well off while we were struggling was that she was a good Christian and blessed by God, while my sister (also a Christian, but divorced from an adulterer ex-husband) was a dirty sinner and an adultress for starting a new relationship. She also chastised her in that e-mail for wanting government assistance with insurance saying that her need for a medical card for her youngest son was "shameful" and a result of her "inability to set priorities".
(My sister, by the way, is raising two little boys as a single mother while working her way through college.)
So yeah... it's getting ugly out there in Republican-ville.
so who wins quote of the week. so many contenders...i think adam wins.
What a bunch of crybabies. Here we see the natural progression of the spoiled right - they have been so pampered by having their own isolated churches, communities, and network news channels that they are literally being killed by the challenge to their "authoritah". If they can't understand that McCain can't go negative due to his extensive skeleton collection, then they not only deserve to lose, they deserve the collected heart attack that will occur within seconds of "that one's" inauguration.
"The only way to stop Obama is by taking him out."
We're winding down this election, and somehow I always figured that would be the Republicans last defense....I guess we'll see if Obama survives October.
Democracy has been reduced to a choice between corpses....
Thank God they are all devout Christians or things could get really ugly.
I agree with Digby at Hullabaloo that part of this is win or lose, the Repubs will have a large base convinced that Obama is out to destroy us and will work to undermine his Presidency if he wins.
When it comes up in conversation I just tell people I will talk about the issues but not about the stupid. It seems to hush 'em up most the time.
They -- and by "they" I mean those angry, fear-riden Republican voters, the GOP, and their candidates -- are just aching to say it, so why don't they? They've (publically) called him everything but…
C'mon people, just say it! Call him "nigger"... go on! You know you want to. Say it. Say "nigger." "Obama's a fucking nigger!" "You want a nigger to be President?!" "Please McCain! Stop that commie nigger from becoming President!"
Racist white trash sacks of shit. You know that's what they're calling him in private. You know they wouldn't shed a tear to see him swingin' from a tree. You know there are some of Palin's Joe Sixpacks out there with nooses and bullets with Obama's name literally on them (though I'm sure some of them would still manage to fuck up the spelling).
I'm so glad to be out of the US. I gotta say, they may not always get the president they need, but they always get the president they deserve.
Ending rant... now.
God, isn't cognitive dissonance fun?
Shit, just when I felt this couldn't get any fucking sillier...
http://www.cbc.ca/world/usvotes/story/2008/10/10/osama-obama.htm
"A typographical error on a New York county absentee ballot gives voters there the option of electing "Barack Osama" as president in the upcoming U.S. election, instead of Barack Obama..."
I've been trying to understand why people support Palin. Last night I saw a story about a group of christian women who support her and feel that she is God's gift to America. And something occurred to me.
There are a lot of people in this country who are not the least bit interested in gathering information. There are SO MANY ways to gather information in this country. So many news channels, so many shows with different perspectives, so many websites, so many newspapers and magazines, so many intelligent commentators offering opinions and supporting information, and so many highly intelligent authors writing books. And yet so many people that I know take advantage of NONE of these things. They don't read books. They don't visit a dozen different web sites for news and opinions from both sides. They all have high speed internet connections and they all have cable or satellite tv with fifty or more channels, yet all of their news comes from one or two sources. Usually the fox republican propaganda network. They use their high speed internet connection for logging in to work, posting pictures of themselves drunk on myspace, and watching funny sports bloopers on youtube.
(And they tell me I'm a freak for having rooms in my house with the walls filled solidly from floor to ceiling with nonfiction books.)
And coincidentally, most of these people support McCain/Palin and think Palin is the most amazing woman they've ever seen in politics. McCain and Palin are perfect, infallable demigods. They agree with every single statement coming out of McPalin's camp, and get angry and indignant when anyone suggests even in an extremely polite way that perhaps there's another view. Many of them are also touchy about Obama, using all the epithets expressed or implied by the McPalin campaign. I've never heard a Palin supporter who supports Palin but says that her statements about Obama are going to far.
What about people I know who think Palin is frightening and support Obama? Nearly every one of them is exactly the opposite. They watch both MSNBC and Fox, they watch both Bill O'Reilly and Keith Olbermann, they read both the Huffington Post and the NRO, and they all own books written by both liberals and conservatives.
And, on top of that, they don't worship Obama. Well, a few of them do, but for the most part, they use phrases like "lesser of two evils" or they disagree with some of what he says but that overall he is preferable to the other guy. Nearly all of them are also open to the ideas of people from the right or left and are willing to calmly and rationally discuss such ideas. (Actually quite a people I know who support Obama are actually conservative on the political spectrum but think the Republican party has lost the way.)
Am I just totally off base here or what?
What does that say? Well, I'm probably going to piss somebody off, but to me it says, Palin supporters are ignorant fools who take statements at their word without review, while Palin haters/reluctant Obama supporters are thoughtful intelligent people who don't believe everything said to them and instead do the research to figure out the truth for themselves.
Sometimes I hate this country. (Haha, how many people does THAT piss off? I must be an unamerican terrorist.)
Now he's going after Michelle. Should be quite a debate if McNasty has the balls to say this shit to O's face.
Well, as the token religious guy around here ;-) let me carry on your diatribe a little, Pcknaak1...
...an underlying problem with many McCain-Palin supporters (particularly the people so in love with Plain's so-called righteous godly self), at least among those who consider themselves Christians and think it is un-Christian to vote against them, is that they are the same kinds of folks who don't really READ their Bibles.
They get all their Christianity from the pastor or from what they seem to recall their parents saying or from right-wing demagogues, etc.
They don't want to think or work at all, and so their voting is following the same tack they take with their religion. Be spoon-fed and don't question authority and rely on soundbites/ideological nuggets/etc.
Because if they were really faithful to begin with, they would realize that Palin is a fraud and is self-serving, not godly.
Those who really read the Word of God go one of two routes if they are being honest with themselves:
1. They try to get closer to God and do more good for people, which includes electing intelligent and relatively humane people.
2. Or their intellectual concerns get in the way of going on faith, and they spurn religion as a myth, and they end up being progressive humanists who try to elect intelligent and relatively humane people.
Ok, that's a gross oversimplification, because there are truly godly Republicans out there with functioning brain cells. They simply read the books and policies differently, as they see the benefits of things like trickle-down econocmics, enforced global democracies, etc. are being for the greater good. (No matter how wrong they are on all of it).
But the rank-and-file people who rabidly follow Palin-McCain (because really, it's Palin they're blindly following) aren't that well read and, as you already noted, don't want to be.
Random, but oh so good: Reason # Eleventy Billion why The West Wing is amazing:
"Sir, by repeating the name of your opponent in public, you essentially give him free advertising."
"Cal thinks you should start referring to him as "my opponent." Or "the other guy," "the other side." Maybe there are other suggestions."
Bartlet: "You want me to refer to Senator John Hoynes of Texas, who at the moment has a 48-point lead for the Democratic nomination as "the other guy"? You're not afraid it's gonna make me look like I can't remember his name? I am. I think it's gonna make me look like I can't remember his name. I think it's gonna make me look addled. It's gonna make me look dotty. And even if it didn't make me look like that, it would remain a stupid idea. What's next? Nothing? Excellent."
Case rested :)
desperate measures for desperate FUCK UP people.
You Obama followers are pathetic...do you honestly believe that a terrorist with 18 months of jr Senator experience would be a better leader than a man with over 30 years of experience?? Bush was hit with a lot of crap his first term in office and had to deal with the reprecautions of the acts of 911...and Bush's "failed" economic plans can be linked back to the House majority Democrats that shot down any plans that would have helped the American people! Real smart people...lets have the Democrats control everything in Washington....you think times are bad now...
BARRACK HUSSEIN OBAMA is a black militant terrorist who will lead this country into a civil racial war either before of after he is assassinated....go with the experience.......McCain!
