Quote of the Week (Contender)

"He was really good for my family. We're hurting financially, but he shares our values... just like Sarah Palin does."

-- Elizabeth Dolan, 31, single mother and waitress, who says she counts George W. Bush among the great presidents in U.S. history (The New York Times/10.8.08)

That was at the rally in Florida where Palin said she felt relieved because "these people get it."

Elizabeth much value fucking people up the ass, then...

I don't think Jesus would approve.

wickedwitch said...

Well it's obvious that Ms. Dolan can't count.

There needs to be an IQ test before you can vote. Call it the Joe Six-Pack Law instead of Jim Crow.

Prophet --

The only person in a position to say that people in Florida "get it" is a Special Olympics coordinator.

What's going on with these people?

a) "They're just like us, so they'll look after our interests."
(This only applies to the rich and privileged.)

b) "Well, at least if they get in, we'll still be poor ... but we won't be overrun with Black Muslims."

c) "We want them to win the election because they're just like us. After that ... who cares? Too busy trying to make ends meet."

d) "That uppity black boy makes me feel stupid, and I don't like that."

"He shares our values - you know, like the sanctity of marriage and belief in the nuclear family," said the single mother.

This is the kind of comment that makes me wonder about the long term future for humanity.

To be fair to the single mother, she may have those values, but her ex might not.

I thought it was the "noo-cular" family...

Just fucking maddening.

There was a great article in the Rolling Stone a few weeks ago that detailed how the Repubs aligned themselves with the religious right. In doing so, they basically made it so that if you're not voting for the R's, you are voting for evil (abortion, etc.) The worst part is that these people blindly go along with it. That's a big reason why this country is so divided.

You know, deacon, I'm glad you mentioned that, because that is what has really been eating at me these last few days, listening to the soundbites and news reports of the increasingly inappropriate, and scary, behavior of the audiences at Republican rallies.

I know people like Sarah Palin, a lot more intimately than you might expect. I know the vibe given off by modern day fundamentalist conservative Christians, first hand. I am privy to much of what they are taught, and how they are encouraged to think, feel, and act, and I understand the motivation behind these teachings. I understand how important it is supposed to be, ethically and spiritually.

Because I know these things as well as I do, I can not find the right superlative to use to express how disgusted I am, not only at the behavior of these candidates (casually tossing around dangerous accusations and condemnations just to get applause), not only at the inexplicably vile behavior of their fans shouting "death!," "kill him!" and "off with his head!," but also at the profound and obvious lack of rebuke from either Palin or McCain. Standing there smiling in silence while their rabid fans work themselves up into a wild-eyed lynch mob. And yes, I used that word deliberately.

Where is the Christian humility from either of these charlatans? Isn't lying a profoundly sinful act? Isn't encouraging and condoning, through inaction, the threat of violence, evil?

A while ago I dismissed McCain and his campaign's tactics as out of touch, cynical, and manipulative. Now as I watch him and his Sith apprentice rile up the rabble, as they light their torches and sharpen their pitchforks, I'm just absolutely sickened.

At the very least, the absolute very least, if the man had any shred of ethical fiber in him, he'd tell his campaign organizers, and the knuckle-dragging racist hooligans they are drawing together, "I'm trying to run for President of the United States, here. Knock it the fuck off!" But it's clear neither McCain or Palin care, and their blatant lack of concern is astonishingly conspicuous.

As a patriot, McCain should be ashamed. As a "christian," Palin should be groveling on her face in the street, rubbing hot sand in her eyes and begging her god to forgive her arrogance and wickedness.

No argument from me on any of that, Votar.

Now, before I say anything else, let me be very clear that while I do believe there will come an End Times period, I DON'T think it's coming in my lifetime or any near-term generation.

With that said, the McCain-Palin crew remind me a lot of the stuff that is suggested and described in Revelation, in that they are using faith and twisting it. (The Sith example you use is good too, for the Star Wars crowd). They are feeding off fears and using faith and Christian values as a foundation, but completely turning them on their heads.

It not only sickens me, but it scares me and angers me. I don't even like to call myself an evangelist, even though technically I am, because that term has been taken over by the nut cases in the Christian circles.

I don't know how closely McCain hold his Christian values, but Palin sure touts hers, so you're right, she in particularly should be on her knees looking for forgiveness. Because the things she lacks are piety (the good kind), humility, honesty and probably damn near ever other virtue under the sun.

These folks are Christian like a snake oil salesman is a doctor...

These people who use faith like this are the folks who make people like me look bad.

The people who let themselves be led by such folks are the ones who make Christians like me look like fools and idiots.

Are we still hung up on the "evangelical" label?

Do you really, really think that the the people who re-elected Bush are ALL "evangelicals"?

That term cam efrom exit polls that were found to be wrong when the predicted Kerry to be the winner.

Bothersome facts, indeed.

Colombo said...

Its funny but when I watch those Palin rallys and I hear people yell "terrorist", "treason", "kill him" I can't help but feel frightened at how close some of your countrymen really are to the mindless chanting and flag burning of terrorist groups and their supporters...

Colombo said...

I can just hear the jingle:

"Can't afford to put real food on the table? Cost of baby food too high?

Why not try some good old values instead... mmmm let your child fill their tummies on these nourishing (but cheap) values*..."

(*contains nuts, may present a choking hazard to anyone with IQ over 90)

Deacon Blue said...

NO, kurgan...all the people who re-elected Bush were NOT evangelicals.

But there is no doubt that the term evangelical has been co-opted by some pretty rotten folks...and a lot of the rank-and-file population now views the word "evangelical" as meaning someone who is preachy, mean-spirited, hateful, shallow, unable to think critically and probably a hypocrite.

May Almighty (deity of your choice here) help us all if Sarah Palin gets anywhere near the White House. It sounds to me like the single waitress mom have fallen for thr 'values' bullshit as have many. It's impossible to share the 'same values' when one of you takes the bus to your $7.65 an hour job, and the other hops on a gulf stream and generates more money in interest in a minute than you make all day. No really Sarah Palin is Marie Antoinette is conservative's clothing. Biofoole

I don't get how Bush was really good for their family if they are hurting financially. Why doesn't she think about the things that could have caused that hurt? And that some the things responsible for it were caused by the Bush Administration. What the hell is wrong with these Republicans brains?
Values? What about actually getting something good done?
