Remember just a few years ago when the Republicans ruled the land while the Democrats, no matter how hard they tried, couldn't get it together to save their lives (or at the very least, their political careers)?
It's almost astonishing how swiftly and absolutely the roles have reversed -- how Republicans now look like the perpetually whining amateurs while the Democrats consistently appear resolute and commanding, even to the point of being able to mock their opponents (as Barney Frank did last Monday after the House Repubilcans shot down the economic bailout proposal because Nancy Pelosi had hurt their feelings).
The question is, will John McCain's inept candidacy for president provide the final nail in the coffin of the former GOP juggernaut?
Fox News and New Republic contributor Howard Wolfson says, unequivocally, yes.
He's already calling "time of death" on the McCain campaign.

Lets hope its yet another railroad spike in McCain's campaign coffin.
I know that governments with more than two parties have their own problems, and coalition governments that result from that create their own brand of chaos sometimes, but does the situation Chez has noted here strike anyone besides me as a case for why we need more than two parties?
It seems that as long as we have this polarized, massive see-saw effect...and as long as people are limited to two choices and have to pick the lesser of two personal evils instead of a party that really meets their needs...we're going to have a mess.
Then again, I'm a healthcare/environment/IT management journalist, not a political scientist, so maybe my head is just up my ass and we should keep going on with the duopoly on politics...
Deacon Blue, you said it well. The problem is that we DO have other parties- They are simply lacking in the backing the current two get to bask in.
In other words, because the other parties generally arent suckling at the great corporate teat, they dont have the funding necessary to get out there and say "Hey, look at us!".
I'd love to see/hear differing views on this one because this is just my opinion.
Well good old native of Blighty (Across the Pond) here....
When will you wake up a smell the shit you Americans are shovelling to the rest of the world.
I feel like the UN should be involved in your election campaing, failing that a good old ASBO (anti social behaviour order) should do the job.
please please please just leave us all the fuck alone....you have enough states to fuck up.....why spread your BSE infected shit over the rest of the world.
We exported Religious people to America....look how you turned out...
We exported convicts to Australia...nuff said, game over, I rest my case.
Putting nails in their coffin only angers them. You have to sever the head, or drive a stake through the heart. I'd like to think that the country was about to get all FVK about this, but I just don't see that happening.
And what have those suddenly resolute Democrats done after taking command?
Capitulating to Bush on electronic spying (FISA), continuing to fund failed wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, shoveling over 800 billion to the same plutocrats who caused the financial meltdown, slipping in a 25 billion dollar bailout to US automakers without a moment of debate or Democratic opposition.
Thank goodness for the Democrats' resoluteness. Without them, imagine what might happen!
To the anonymous Brit: I feel that I have to respond in kind, although I know quite a few people from your country who arent nearly as ignorant as you I will play along with your style here- I love to hear about how YOU British act when you play tourist.
When I was in a far more interesting part of the world than where you were spawned (Probably between pints) I had changed some plans regarding my final destination, primarily because it was widely known that drunken and obnoxious British tourists spent their time haranguing and annoying the locals and those far more polite.
When I was asked by some new friends (Locals that never who never said anything nearly as ignorant as "You Americans") if I was going to feel like I was going to miss anything I responded that I had heard about all the drunken English speaking idiots running around and if I really wanted to deal with that kind of annoying low class behavior I'd go to a sports bar here in Chicago instead.
They were quite entertained by my response and told me that American tourists were far nicer than YOU Brits, so please sod off and go annoy somebody else.
At this point, please imagine me holding up my two fingers in a proper salute to your attitude.
To clarify- I'm certainly not taking a defensive stance regarding our government. Washington DC needs an enema to be sure, but to hear the igorant utterance of "you Americans" just plain pisses me off.
And I'm still holding up those two fingers.
Couple things: To the Brit--
Do you realize there are 300 million of us? Do you realize that nearly your entire population voted for Bush, and nearly your entire population voted against him.
We are number three in world population. You are number 22.
Why is this important? It speaks to the vast diversity in this country. It also speaks to the vast ignorance you spew.
Look, I think the US is incredibly screwed up. But you think it's ok to stereotype 300 million people?
I know lots of Brits, mostly from Reading, who positively love living here. They are not soccer hooligans. They are not violent or worthless drunks. I know French people who's armpits do not smell. I know a Hungarian who learned not to despise Turks when they found one another here in the States.
Every region here is different. For every group of Americans that numbers your population, we have an entirely different sub culture.
I accept criticism. US Foreign policy has been shit lately. So has economic policy. Some of us are trying to fix it.
But you're not offering criticism, really. Just douchenozzelry.
And in lighter news: CHECK OUT OLBERMANN mauling the Pit Bull. 11 minutes of political ecstasy, I tell ya. Every nanosecond.

Rude Americans, rude Brits ... at least we still have those polite Canadians.
Oh, wait.
I meant no offense in giving the appearance of stereotyping the general population of the USA.
I'm amazed at whats going on over there, but am equally disgusted by the attitude of our own media (at large) and our own politicians.
I see no other politician or party supplanting our existing chiefs who would not similarly spew forth more ineptitude if they got in to power.
As for stereotyping, think the original post was about the election campaign, obviously the responses seem to have gone off on one, probably my fault.....probably should have made it more clear that the post was about the election campaign (thought it did), but obvioulsy you managed to get a couple of things off your chest.
As for being Ignorant, again I thought my original post was about the current Campaign, which is being played out like some bad 'big brother' episode, however criticism noted:-
