Last Call

I'll make this quick and to the point.

A friend of mine once joked that in order to pull off a successful booty call, there are two things you absolutely can't do: 1) wait until the very last minute -- say, four in the morning -- and 2) actually come right out and admit your intentions in no uncertain terms to the person you're calling. (This conversation stemmed from the fact that his roommate had, the previous night, come home drunk from a club, called an ex and, when she picked up, shouted, "Hey, this is a booty call!" into the phone.)

I bring this up because apparently no one ever told John McCain these essential rules.

With less than a month to go before the election, the McCain camp -- having struck out with voters like, well, the old guy at the club -- has chosen to resort to going hyper-negative, making grossly unethical, unsubstantiated claims against Barack Obama in the hope of somehow changing its very bad luck. It's the political equivalent of making a booty call at 4AM. But here's the thing: McCain's people, in keeping with the laughably inept way that they've run their campaign almost from the start, have publicly announced their decision to begin slinging mud. Their surrogates admitted to the press that the only option left is to try to deflect attention away from the issues, like the economy, through scare tactics aimed at painting Obama as a shady outsider who consorts with terrorists and, if elected, will immediately grow a moustache that he can twirl while laughing at America's demise.

It's, needless to say, crap of the highest order.

And it won't work because even the densest among the undecided electorate can see that they're basically getting a drunken late-night phone call from a guy who wasn't able to close the deal any other way. They know this because McCain told them so.

The only smart thing to do, of course?

Hang up.

Otherwise, you'll wake up the morning after election day wondering what the hell happened and feeling really ashamed of yourself.

As I was driving home this evening, I passed a house that had a McCain/Palin yardsign displayed. My immediate thought was to stop the car and write "Election First, Country...when we get to it", but I didn't have a pen.

I really don't understand how people can support the GOP ticket and maintain their diginity. This is the most poorly run organization outside of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Yet, if you throw enough mud, some of it is going to stick. Signs like the one I saw tonight, remind me there are enough uninformed, easily swayed lemmings that will vote for McCain despite being given every reason in the world not to do so.

Some kids just want to play in traffic.

He really is a maverick! Making booty calls to the people who've been ass-raped by Bush over the last eight years. Very uncool. Let's hope he doesn't become president. I'd hate to see what would happen if he started drunk dialing Angela Merkel.

I dunno, maybe it's just the fact that I've lost all faith in the people of this country but I think they'll choke down plenty of this bullshit. Especially if it's being fed by someone "just like them".

One thing though I did think was funny, seeing one of her answers again today from the debate, she said we need and have extraordinary in our government and she's one of those people. But she's also average joe six-pack too. Whaaaaaa???????

The question though - are you sure they will hang up?

I live in what I lovingly term "Hell" or the town with the world headquarters of the Assemblies of God religion and Bass Pro - For some of these people McCain/Palin are sent with divine intentions. They love/worship/idolize those two.
These are the voters that terrify me, they do not listen to the issues. It is scary to listen to otherwise intelligent people spout the McCain/Palin rhetoric with an almost foaming at the mouth devotion.
They just know that Obama is a Muslim/terrorist/evil community organizer and no amount of showing them the truth will change their minds.

There's a reasonably good chance of this working. During the primaries there was an analyst on some NPR segment talking about mud-slinging in politics. He noted that, despite people complaining about it, it was always done because it always worked. People just think emotionally, either by nature, or by nurture. (I vote the latter)

Also, let's remember that McCain and Obama are still within striking distance of each other, as far as statistics and such go. It's likely McCain doesn't expect any real sea change; he just needs to convert enough fence-sitters to give him a shot.

This article may be relevant:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/10/04/AR2008100402333.html?nav=rss_print

According to the article, there are still people who will vote against Obama because he's black, or because they think he'll give too much to welfare. McCain just needs to turn a few more in that direction, and, if nothing else, the election will be close. Perhaps even contestable.

Last minute? There are four weeks to go, my friend. This is likely only the beginning.

Take a peek at Faux News next time you get a chance. The crawl at the bottom, which anywhere else you'd expect to read about miscellaneous world news events -- "CHINA ARRESTS MORE MILK SCIENTISTS...PUPPIES CAUSE CANCER...FAWN LIEBOWITZ DIES IN KILN EXPLOSION..." -- has been replaced with a continuous, narrative string of anti-Obama accusations. They're not even pretending anymore.

I can't even imagine what the next month has in store for us.

Hey Chez,
Isn't this what they do? I mean, wasn't Kerry ahead in the polls around this time last election and then they started the mud slinging? I think we can't overestimate these people and anticipate these tactics and have a plan of attack. I don't know how many times Democrats are going to lose out before they start giving them a taste of their own medicine.

Check out this cheesy video of Lizard face McCain:

But is someone going to be picking up the 3am phone call, and can McCain trust them if they do pick up?

Well, it was only a matter of time until the McCain camp tossed out the "Obama's a Muslin!!!1111" card. Hopefully by now the voters are smart enough to see it for what it is---a buzzer-beater heave from half-court.

Thank you. For the last two days I've been wondering why NOBODY in our main stream media had the vision to point out how incredibly stupid this was of the McSame campaign, especially given some of the characters Saint Johnny has chosen to "pal around with" over the years.

Yep .. they just have to bring it a little closer. Keep an eye on them votin' machines.

(Heh. "Kiln explosion".)

In contrast to many of these commenters, I agree that it won't work -- but for a different reason.

It won't work because it's simply not a pressing concern for the voters. What the hell does Bill Ayers have to do with making your mortgage payment? Putting your kid through college? Retiring with dignity and money in the bank?

It's not that McCain can't change the subject away from the economy because he announced it. He can't change the subject away from the economy because that's what people want to talk about right now. Period.

There is an extremely interesting article on Rolling Stone about McCain's history... pretty much all of it. It's a long read, but well, well worth it. If everyone in his camp read this, it'd be much less of a contest.

I read this. I'll probably post something about it at some point.

I'm afraid. We still have four weeks before this is decided, and it was around this time 4 years ago that the swift boat for truth people started coming out and Kerry started falling from his lead.

Michael J. West said...

The CNN headline for right this very moment:

Dow falls below 10,000
Blue-chip average under milestone for the 1st time in nearly 4 years as fears about financial crisis grow.

I rest my case. McCain's trying to change the subject to ANYTHING besides the economy is a fool's errand.

And Anonymous, you're not correct. The Swift Boat for Truth people made their big splash in the months before the '04 conventions. Irrationality, and rewriting history to serve that irrationality, aren't going to help anything.

This is the stuff that makes me sick, especially knowing that there's still four more weeks to go. I know that Obama has called them out for resorting to the mudslinging because there is no substance to their own campaign, but it frightens me to think that some people might be swayed by their lies. The McCain camp is desparate, and just when I think they can't sink any lower, they do.

I read this morning that Palin is dragging out the Reverend Wright nonsense again. Really? What about her church "converts" gay people, or the footage of her warding away witches with her pastor? I almost think I liked it better when they weren't letting her speak.

I'm late to the post, but is there a link to an article that has the quote? I'd love to pass on to the Repub clones I know.
