A History of Abuse

Last week, we all got a pretty good look at the reality of John McCain's opinion of Barack Obama. During the debate, McCain was surly, condescending and petty, to say nothing of outright disrespectful in his refusal to even look Obama in the eye.

But lest you think that this little Colonel Nathan Jessup routine -- making sure no one can ever mistake his utter disdain for anyone who asks him to justify his actions -- is something recently cultivated, take a look at this rather startling correspondence between McCain and Obama regarding Senate ethics reform measures.

It's more than two-and-a-half years old:

Sen. Obama and Sen. McCain Exchange Letters on Ethics Reform

If I were in a joking mood, I'd say that I can practically picture McCain dictating his part of the above correspondence to some poor lackey in his Senate office: "I can call that uppity little prick a son-of-a-bitch, right? Who the fuck does he think he's messing with? And WHERE THE HELL'S MY GODDAMNED OATMEAL?!" Instead though, all I can muster is offense; it's literally offensive that someone of McCain's stature and position can behave so childishly, particularly in an official capacity. McCain sounds like what he apparently is: a pissed-off, slighted old man. His letter reads like the kind of thing a snide and bitter ex-lover might write in a huff to the one who dumped him.

It's just not the behavior you'd expect -- no, demand -- from a fucking United States Senator.

At what point does this kind of outrageous and ill-tempered crap become acceptable from our leaders? And is this sort of erratic behavior -- the kind of short-fused, hyper-sarcastic temperament -- that we want representing this country in the White House and around the world?

I guess this must be what makes John McCain a "maverick" -- he doesn't care about propriety or any of that carefully thought-out civility stuff.

He just responds to situations by doing or saying the first thing that comes to mind.

And when you're his age, who the hell knows what that's gonna be from one minute to the next.

You surely will not deny the central premise of McCain's letter - that Barack Obama is an opportunist extraordinare, of a caliber that is rarely seen. From his "present" votes and careful avoidance of any record on which he could be challenged; to his focus on caucus states to win a primary without a majority of Democrats voting for him; to his blocking the delegate votes of Florida and Michigan in the primary; to the orchestration of Bill Clinton being a "racist" (which is still the most comical scene in this entire comedy of errors!), to the puppy that his poor kids are finally going to get solely for the photo-op of it running across the White House lawn. He is a master of manipulation. Truly. Sincerely.

And as for your taking offense at McCain's letter - Dude, you set the standard for smart-ass, in-your-face, fuck-off comments. John McCain could not get close to you on his very best day. You offended. That's funny.

Wow man, what the fuck? In reading those letters I, like Obama, had no idea where that extremely off base response came from. It made no sense at all. Why act all bitter and butt hurt when his letter to you indicated that he was thanking you for making him a part of the meeting and re-iterating a stance? Seems to me that someone read that first letter the wrong way, added an extra stress somewhere perhaps, and he flew off half-cocked with a response. I also noticed that the same attitude in that letter -- one of utter disdain and dismissal -- is ever present even two years later. McCain genuinely does not like Obama. Have to wonder why that is. Maybe it stems from this incident, where he felt slighted and shown up.

Way to hold a grudge for a slight you invented all on your own. Isn't that a symptom of paranoid schizophrenia?

Your lawn, I'm getting off of it.

My first thought was of that Daily Show of Sen. Ted Stevens shouting "No!"

My second thought was of his incredibly dickish interview with the Des Moines Register Editorial Board that just came out.

My third thought was that we *cannot* allow this man to become president.

Anon 10:02 --

I take it you were a Hillary Clinton supporter, since all your "examples" of Obama's supposed mastery of the dark art of political opportunism seem to revolve around the Clintons -- which is just laughably ironic, considering that Bill and Hillary raised underhanded machinations to an art form. So no, I actually don't have to admit that Obama is excessively manipulative, because he isn't.

As for my rudeness and lack of decorum vs. McCain's -- you're kidding right? Please tell me you in fact do know the difference between me occasionally being an "in-your-face" asshole and McCain doing it.

Just in case you don't, I'll remind you:

I'M NOT AN ELECTED OFFICIAL AND DON'T WANT TO BE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

anon 10:02 has a point,

chez, you spend day after day slamming sarah palin.

do you have foreign policy experience?
have you ever chaired a senate committee?
can you protect us from russia?
have you tried to protect your state out from Big Oil?

CAN YOU PLAY THE FUCKING FLUTE?

no? then you're a hypocrite.

i think we should extend anon's logic to all fields of journalism. sports writers should have to be able to throw 90 mile per hour strikes and 100 yard touchdowns before being allowed to criticize athletes. oh, and music critics should have to pass conservatory proficiency exams on all instruments about which they write.

You know something just occurred to me. If the mythology of the usurpation of the Clinton Dynasty were true, she and her husband wouldn't be out there campaigning for Obama, she wouldn't have nominated him at their convention; she'd have taken her 18 million broken marbles off the playground and formed her own party, picked her own running mate, siphoned off a healthy chunk of both his and McCain's swing voters, and be the viable third party contender to sweep into Washington in January on her white unicorn.

Chez -- this is a little off topic, but I received this link from a bookseller friend. The claim is that the McCain camp is soliciting ghost-written letters to editors supporting McCain and Palin. You probably have the connections to check it out for "veracity" (pretending, of course, that there is any left in this campaign) http://www.salon.com/news/primary_sources/2008/09/24/mccain_letters/index.html

Feel free to delete this comment -- just wanted to get the link to you.

'You commented in your letter about my "interest in creating a task force to further study" this issue, as if to suggest I support delaying the consideration of much-needed reforms rather than allowing the committees of jurisdiction to hold hearings on the matter. Nothing could be further from the truth. The timely findings of a bipartisan working group could be very helpful to the committee in formulating legislation that will be reported to the full Senate. Since you are new to the Senate, you may not be aware of the fact that I have always supported fully the regular committee and legislative process in the Senate, and routinely urge Committee Chairmen to hold hearings on important issues. In fact, I urged Senator Collins to schedule a hearing upon the Senate's return in January.'

Methinks he doth protest too much.

In relation to this post, I invite you to check out something I posted today that may shed even more light on his overall character. It is, naturally, under the heading of "The biggest asshole I have ever met"....
