Well folks, here it is: the Best Story Yet to come out of the Republican National Convention.
This is so completely laughable -- so utterly absurd -- that I honestly couldn't improve upon it comedically I tried.
Sure I poked fun at it a little earlier today, but what really was on that giant screen behind McCain during the first part of his speech last night? Well, what delegates saw that most TV viewers couldn't was an image of a lush green lawn leading to an ornate two-story building surrounded by trees and hedges.
What was this building?
It was Walter Reed Junior High School in North Hollywood, California.
And what does that have to do with John McCain?
Nothing, as far as anyone can tell.
A theory being tossed around?
That the McCain camp Google Image searched "Walter Reed," or something to that effect -- looking for pictures of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center -- and went with the most impressive and striking photo they found for the giant wall, without bothering to take a closer look at just what building was actually shown in the picture.
Think this sounds preposterous?
Just too ridiculous to be true?
I'd love to hear another explanation.

Oh McCain, you card! You were pulling a fast one on us, weren't you? Surely showing an affluent high school named similarly to a underfunded Veterans clinic is good for a laugh. Ho ho! Such a kneeslapper.
Such an eye for detail Chez....and how it's going to waste!! What a Shame!!
Anyone could find and use a picture of Walter Reed Medical Center. Using a picture of Walter Reed Middle School was a very Maverick-y thing to do.
Is it just me or was McCain wearing an obscene amount of make-up during the speech? It's a wonder the lights didn't melt his face off.
Actually, as I live a few miles away, I wouldn't call that an affluent school. It's actually in a kind of dicey neighborhood.
Though I think we're getting this all wrong. This is McCain trying to burnish the suspicious lack of PTA leadership on his resume. That's what counts now, right?
i love it. i saw this earlier on sullivan or tpm or something. this with the palin thing did it for me.
there is now absolutely no excuse to be associated with the republican party. I could forgive it for a while in some of my friends, but this is the end, my only friend.
Just saw this on Fark.com, compliments of Farker Pocket Ninja:
"Early reports this morning are suggesting that the "green screen" backdrop used by Senator McCain during his speech last night were intended to depict the Walter Reed Medical Facility, but actually--and mistakenly--depicted Walter Reed Middle School in North Hollywood, CA. This is an inaccurate assessment of the situation. McCain staffers thoroughly vetted a variety of locations to be used as a backdrop for the presidential nominee's speech, and settled deliberately on Walter Reed Middle School for several reasons. The fact that it is a middle school represents the sincere connection that the McCain campaign has to middle America, the lifeblood of this great country, and further depicts our sincere appreciation of the fact that children--even children in a traditionally liberal stronghold such as California--represent the future of this great nation. By choosing a middle school sharing the same name as the Walter Reed Medical Facility, John McCain is demonstrating his sincere appreciation and hope that the young Americans attending this facility of education will grow up to be the sort of American heroes who will one day possibly be served by the Walter Reed Hospital. This is the great hope and fervent prayer of our candidate--that all Americans, even those not appreciated by the urban elite, recognize the potential of a hero within themselves without having to lose five and a half years of their own lives in the process."
I am getting such a kick out of these replies.....
You know, the painful army of you posting about intellect and now this.........oh boy.
Someone needs to use the conveniently-provided green-screen footage during the speech and edit some fitting clips into the space behind McCain.
*yawn* Backgrounds?
I think the Republicans have simply sacrificed care for "speed" at this point. The don't seem to give a shit much one way or the other if their decisions or sound bites are shown to be utter idiocy or bullshit at this point. They are just running full bore with the "safety net" being that none of the idiots that are their base will believe the "liberal media" when these mistakes/lies are pointed out. The you-just-got-buttfucked-on-national-TV doesn't seem to phase them anymore.
Google image search...you're doing it wrong.
Hi Chez,
Would you be willing to address the following question:
Why should I not be terrified of the (very) possible outcome of the forthcoming election?
--A veteran who led one of the first offenses in the great War on Christmas, '06
I'm sorry, what?
the actions of the Republicans have slipped so far into the realm of absurdity that I'm beginning to wonder if there's a Democrat mole or two embedded to sabotage the campaign.
My apologies; I'm using a little alcohol to fight the pain from an old injury, and thusly may not be as coherent as I thought.
Because of the events of the last presidential election, and because of the games the Republican party is playing, I'm terrified by the strong possibility that McCain will win.
Not to get back to the convention butt.....Did anyone notice how:
1: Everyone agreed family is off limits, right? Right?
2: That Trig was shown at least a dozen times during Palin's speech? At first being held and stroked by Cindy McCain, (whom Palin barely knew a month ago) then the eldest daughter, then the youngest, and then finally, as if practiced, passed to Palin at the very beginning of the end of her speech?
Talk about making a fucking trophy out of your own disabled child. All to drive a political, but more evangelical point home.
But family is off limits right? Not unless you're shamelessly pandering to a focus group...
I think it's easier these days to just practice sucking your own wiener than pretend that %51 percent of American's think about whom and what they're actually voting for...
