So I finally got around to seeing Doomsday -- director Neil Marshall's largely overlooked killer virus cum action splatter movie from earlier this year.
Holy shit is it a blast.
From exploding bunnies, to barbecued British guys, to an overall feel that's unapologetically derivative of 80s b-movies (for God's sake, the titles are lifted directly from Escape from New York), to the best use of Adam and the Ants' Dog Eat Dog and Siouxsie and the Banshees' Spellbound ever, to Rhona Mitra (the no bullshit sexiest woman alive) kicking ass in a skin-tight black bodysuit -- this is the best shut-your-brain-off picture I've seen in quite a while.
Add it to your Netflix queue and make sure to crank it up real loud so it shatters the cosmo glasses of the girls next door who've gathered to watch the Sex and the City movie on DVD.

Loved this movie !
You kind of have to shut your brain down to enjoy this. I like a good crazy every now and then, but this movie was all over the map, blending genres without the slightest justification, and outright stealing scenes from other movies (and not always good scenes from good movies).
Having said that, a double feature of "Shoot 'Em Up" and "Doomsday" on a Saturday night would be a sublime weekend lobotomy, and possibly the greatest collection of surreal cartoon violence without subtitles.
I'd add "Crank" to that and make it a triple feature. I'd also add lots of alcohol. Rhona Mitra, Clive Owen, and The Statham....YUM!!
Crank's great fun.
But oh Rhona.
Rhona, Rhona Rhona.
I'll see your Rhona Mitra, and raise you an Evangeline Lilly
This movie had me at Fine Young Cannibals.
Never liked the Cannibals, although obviously the reference within the movie is brilliant.
But man -- I'll never listen to Spellbound the same way again.
I'll see Rhona Mitra and Evangeline Lilly, and I'll raise...
Oh, fuck it.
I fold.
