Interlude

I have only one question for those who live elsewhere across this great land of ours and who insist on using 9/11 and the collapse of the World Trade Center as a deafening rallying cry to vote Republican at all costs -- who implore us all to "Never Forget."

Have you ever wondered why New York City itself -- a place that will indeed never forget the horror of 9/11 -- is almost certain to vote overwhelmingly against the Republican candidate this November?

Excellent point! I can tell you that living in the Midwest (St. Louis) a lof of people here do not know or forgot that Rudy was not a popular mayor and well on his way out before 9/11.

D.C., too, will never forget that day. And we voted 90% for John Kerry in 2004.

Unfortunately, for the same reasons I cannot stand the likes of Limbaugh and O'Reilly, Olberman chafes me with his "righteous indignations" act.

Mind you, I could not agree with him more and I recognize that the Dems need this sort of pandering show to counter the many shows the Republicans have. Still, it smacks of white trash talk shows polluting the airwaves daily: Geraldo-Springer politics.

I was playing hockey the other day. We were losing and instead of concentrating and playing harder, many on my team started taunting the opposing players. It may have made members on my team feel better about themselves, but in the end we still lost.

I'd much rather win the game.

This argument might be effective if NY had been a primarily red state prior to 911. The fact that it has overwhelming gone Democratic, and will continue to proves absoloutley nothing. There are other issues in play here. Abortion, gay rights, and immigration(I could keep listing). Just the same as there are other issues attracting the rest of the country to the Republican party besides 911. Having hailed from NY I would expect nothing less from the state considering the demographics. Come on Chez, you don't really believe that this is the only reason NY will be voting against the Republican ticket? I mean you have enumerated so many other reasons in your blog.

Olbermann sure does have a purty mouth.

Like I said before... McCain people should deposited into the Pacific.

Kathleen --

I wasn't implying that 9/11 is the only reason New Yorkers vote Democratic (that would be ridiculous anyway). Just pointing out that while other parts of the country -- those not directly affected by the attacks -- tend to use 9/11 as a battle cry to justify voting Republican, the place that actually endured the attacks doesn't seem to be on board.

Here is what I don't get regarding 9/11 and the Commissions report delivered by the government which describes the falling of the towers. The numbers don't add up to what happened on that fateful day. Do the math yourself - don't believe me as I could be some conspiracy kook looking to stir the pot by quoting numbers out of thin air. Do the math yourself!

The government released the 9/11 Commission report which describes that the towers fell in approximately 10 seconds. Everyone with a high school diploma should be able to do the physics/math calculations to determine that an object falling in a "vacuum" from the towers height is around 9 seconds. Add in air resistance (and the whole frigging building supporting you underneath) and your calculated numbers for a pancaking/falling building will be a lot larger than 10 seconds.

So if everyone can do this math themselves using their Grade 12 physics books, why is everyone believing what the government is saying regarding how the towers fell (10 second pancaking falling building? Impossible!). Why isn't this being brought up during this election?

Oh wait, ya, I forgot... It has been said enough times on this web site lately. People are DUMB.

Somehow, I think Edward R. Murrow would be proud. MSNBC was stupid for removing him as an Election Anchor.

Your 9/11 piece and this Olbermann video made me think of The Shock Doctrine short by Alfonso Cuaron and Naomi Klein. Check it out:

Duane,

I don't begrudge you your opinion of Olbermann, but I have a serious question: If like me, you share Olbermann's thoughts, you must surely share his outrage. Do you think that outrage is a)insincere or b)not appropriate to someone giving opinion on a televised show. I concede the fact that much of Limbaugh's, O'Reilly's and Hannity's outrage is manufactured, or at least over-wrought. But since I share Olbermann's outrage I don't think his anger is misplaced, nor do I think it inappropriate.
Please understand, I am not questioning your sincerity I'm asking in earnest, why do you equate Olbermann with blowhards who have little or no connection to actual outrages committed by this administration?

I'm not entirely sure what you're getting at but I saw the first tower fall. It was gone in seconds.

I agree with Olberman's outrage. I understand where he's coming from. But he's preaching to the choir. It's like Al Franken's books. He's not converting anyone, he's only making the believers feel smug.

Maybe he's just too polished, he comes across as slick (and I really do like him). Maybe it's because he could have said all the same things in half the time.

What works best for Comedy Central and the Daily Show is that they touch upon the issue and let it alone. It's obvious. Limaugh and Oreilly harp on an issue because they are about indoctrination and the hillbillies listening love to wallow in the mud. We liberals (i.e. Forward Thinkers) should be more about what we can do now.

That's my point.

I know it says a Special Comment- not... "News Analysis" or whatever. And I do agree with what Olbermann is saying. And I also understand what you are trying to point out. But should this really be on a news website?

I do like the phrase "The blind leading the bland" though.
