Listening Post

Back when I was in my mid-20s, somebody wrote that there had to be something in the water in Chicago. That seemed the only possible explanation for the fact that bands and artists like Cheap Trick, Smashing Pumpkins, Urge Overkill, Veruca Salt and Liz Phair all came out of that city and the surrounding area.

Chicago is still cranking out damned impressive rock these days: No, I'm not a huge Fall Out Boy fan, but their success in furthering the Chicago pop sound is a little tough to argue with.

Which brings me to The Hush Sound.

If you watch the Fox network these days, and I can't say I recommend that you do, you'll hear a song called Medicine Man being used in the promos for the upcoming episodes of House.

That song is the second single off The Hush Sound's latest release, Goodbye Blues.

Here's the first: Honey.

And, as a special Friday bonus -- a band that The Hush Sound reminds me of quite a bit. One of my favorite groups of all time, Jellyfish, with The Ghost at Number One.

Chicago produces some the best music and art in general because it's big enough to have a critical mass of awesome, but doesn't have the reputation of glamor that brings out the scensters and hipster asshats who just get in the way at the coastal cities. They're still there, just not in the same quantity. The hush sound is great.

Holy crap. So apparently, YOU'RE the other person listening to this band. I bought "Like Vines" on a whim, and loved it.

I've discovered awesome new music because of your listening posts. I hope you continue them.

The Hush Sound is really good and I'm not all that embarrassed by Fall Out Boy. But Plain White T's are another story altogether...

You could always mention some of my favorite Chicago bands of all time that came out in that era. Smoking Popes, Screeching Weasel, Jesus Lizard, Shellac, No Empathy, Naked Raygun, Stabbing Westward, etc. And don't forget about Ministry...

I could go on and on...

Don't ask me how I know this, but the lead singer vaguely reminds me of L.C. from The Hills. Amazing voice though.
