Instinct vs. Extinct

Last week, I wrote a piece which asked why being staunchly liberal seems to go hand-in-hand with being overly-analytical and thoroughly humorless (Why So Serious?/4.25.08). To help prove my point, I mentioned the blogging battle that went on recently between Rolling Stone columnist Matt Taibbi and Methuselan feminist icon Erica Jong.

I made no bones about whom I was siding with in their hilarious little flamewar -- and all you have to do is read the latest material from each to get a clear indication of why I think one is exactly the kind of voice the American left needs right now and the other is a tired and ridiculous cliché who should just go ahead and die already.

(Rolling Stone: "Jesus Made Me Puke" by Matt Taibbi)

(The Huffington Post: "Natural Nudists Unite!" by Erica Jong)

I get excited every time I hear Tiabbi is going to be on Real Time with Bill Maher. He just "gets it" and really knows how to convey the absolute absurdity of politics and our culture in general. You're right, Chez...he's somebody to latch onto.

Taibbi's brilliant -- one of the best political writers I've ever seen. He's not very good on-camera though, which isn't a knock against him, just a fact.

My father was an alcoholic circus clown who used to beat me with his oversize shoes.

Yes, that would certainly convince me to turn to religion as the less terrifying alternative.

I'd like to cast out the demon of handwriting analysis, and typing for that matter, if it meant that Erica Jong could never write such trite bullshit again:

"I apologize for...wanton shit. I apologize that I suck at sarcastic apologies."

The only thing that would make my born-again ass go to one of those weekend religious monstrosities would be the promise, as Matt Taibbi had, that I would be writing about that shit in Rolling Stone.

And even then I'd have to think twice...

As much as I love Matt Taibbi, as much as I don't care about Erica Jong, and as much as I thought he pwned her in their recent blog-a-blog, I have to say I think Jong gets it right about that Miley Cyrus picture. There is nothing wrong with that picture -- it's a nice shot, arty, mildly erotic conceivably, but hardly pornographic.

Given that the mass media is all the time much more brazen in making little girls look titillating, this one isn't even in the noise.

Oh, and your sidebar bleg, "Help Keep Porn Ads Off This Site ..."?

Not the most persuasive pitch for donations I've ever seen. ;^)
