Thank You

It's just that simple.

The outpouring of support I've received has been staggering -- beyond anything I could've imagined or hoped for.

I promise I'll be posting something new later today.

How can you be so dumb, after 16 years in TV you thought you could get away by writing your opinions about current affairs and such under your true identity? I mean what were you thinking!!! And hello your bio mentions that you work for CNN. No matter how personal your opinion is, it will still reflect on the company that you work for. Heck, you know there are journalists who don't vote so that their coverage of news remains unbiased!!!! This is not just about freedom of speech its about journalistic integrity. Who the fuck wants to know about your personal opinion when as a journalist you gotta remain unbiased. If not that you could have atleast tried using some common sense. Of course they were going to fire you when you start writing for a well known website. And guess what pal, as hard as it may sound, you are not likely to land a job in a major network anytime soon. Everyone has the same ground rule and if you owned a media company you would too. Good luck and next time sit back and "think" a little.

Fellow "AMer" --

You're so wrong on so many different levels -- but hey, you just keeping on believing that nonsense; you'll keep your nice little job working for a "major network," and you can go to sleep at night (or whenever you sleep) convincing yourself you're a professional journalist. Kick ass man.

As for me, I've NEVER been happier.

By the way, I notice you aren't willing to use your real name.

Good idea. That's "thinking."

The amount of "doocing"
that's going on lately is rather frightening.

I work at a firm that has "dooced" one before yet still, defiantly, I blog. Can u imagine? It's wild, almost communist, no?

I make no mention of who I work for, etc. but I know it's just a matter of time. But it keeps me sane so I still do it. Whatever.

Subjugating my creativity for the almighty dollar is hard enough. I blog because I have to. I mean, as sarcastically as I make it sound, its somewhat the truth. It's the frail thread which keeps me on the other side of the fence from the full-on automatons.

Bravo, Chez!

You have to got to be kidding me Chez. Surely a 38 year old grown man would have to know that you can't post stuff like this on your blog and expect to keep a job like Senior Producer at a place like CNN. That post "Will Barack Obama have to Choke a Bitch?" was beyond the pale and you should have known that. I say that as a 38 year old myself. To be honest, as a black man, whether you meant it in a racially hostile manner or not, I found it pretty offensive.

I mean here Barack is a Harvard-educated attorney, eloquent as hell, and you come up with yet another racially-charged reference to him in the guise of a campaign commercial. Surely you know the kind of pressure MSM outlets like CNN have been under from conservatives that they're biased as hell when it comes to political coverage. That's why they had to fire you in my opinion. I wish you maturity in your search for a new gig dude, because you definitely need it.

Isn't it possible that there's no real wrongdoing in this whole situation? If CNN doesn't want any reflection of bias, they have the right to remove an outspoken opinionmaker. It's a win-win!

Hi! Just discovered you via the NYT.

I say: Congratulations!

You gain your -- indeed, possibly frightening, given the soon to be bambino, etc. -- freedom, AND you also help to expose the stupidity, ignorance, pettiness and generalized assbackwardness of Establishment American Journalism.

Fuck CNN and the rest of them -- you were obviously too evolved for them. This is giving you the exposure that will propel you to the next phase of your life. I hope Jon Stewart invites you for a Daily Show Interview... or at the very least mentions the situation on the air. It's right up his alley!

I've bookmarked you and am looking forward to seeing what you do next. Do your own show!

Also, to "Rob:" I read the hilariously silly pseudo ad you're referring to. Dude: I don't know Chez, but I do know that you REALLY don't get it. Seems pretty obvious that the spot is not a reflection of what Chez thinks of African Americans and Barack Obama; it's a comment on Hillary, that phony-ass, manipulative, condescending and power-hungry bitch, and what SHE thinks of African Americans and Obama (and Southerners too -- see the line about Edwards country).

Now I get to go read some more of your stuff, Chez. Thanks!

DesScorp said...

News organizations....REAL news organizations....should want unbiased reporters and producers. Everyone has an opinion, but those in journalism have a special responsibility of neutrality, or they can't be trusted as arbiters of the news.

You knew what you were doing when you created this blog. You knew what you were doing when you took the HuffPuff gig. You made your choice. CNN made the correct one. If you want to be a political commentator affiliated with one side of the spectrum, then you should have resigned at CNN before they had to sack you. You were a news producer, not a producer of an opinion show.

Sue said...

I don't care what the bosses say, people have a right to express their opinions on their own time and in their own way. Whether you want to blog about it or scream it in the streets shouldn't matter. You never badmouthed CNN directly, at least that I recall, and those who fired you are just First Amendment violating assholes.

Al said...

You've put a lot of yourself in your writing and it has affected people. Whether they log off pissed, amused, inspired, introspective or simply humming a great song I'm sure there are many more than are posting here that appreciate your efforts.

I'd be quite certain few of them were anywhere near as touched by your production efforts on AM.

You may have been a TV producer, you quite likely will be one again. That's what you do. What you are is a writer - something I define as more than simply putting pen to paper, but instead having the ability to tap into something profound and express it through word. One of your talents is a gift...the other merely a skill.

I wish you and Jayne the best - all that kid needs is love, diapers and some milk, don't sweat the rest of the BS and you'll be fine.

KevinJ said...

Chez,
Even my kids (16 and 13, very politically aware) who I talk to about your blog, and refer it to them fairly often (particularly my 16 year old daughter--a smart ass like her old mom) think it's insane you got fired. And to you anonymous trolls with the "oh, you knew what you were doing, blah blah blah....." just shut the fuck up!

Anonymous said...

LR: If you really knew Chez, the man, you wouldn't have to ask that question.
CNN was just a job. Writing, well now, that's his passion. He is extremely talented.
And incase you haven't noticed yet, more people are on the internet than sitting in front of a tv.
You just wait, you all just wait, CHEZ PAZIENZA isn't going anywhere but all the way to the top. All in due time.

Oh, and here's a news flash: the world doesn't revolve around CNN.

AND for all of you who work in the media, all of you who keep writing and saying he should have thought of ethics instead and he should have gaven up his blog, I think your true feeling is one of jealousy.
Only for the simple reason that he stayed true to himself and the rest of you are just simply bending over and taking it.

Right or Wrong, he stayed true to himself. Not many of us can actually say that, now can we??????

Chez, this one is for you!!

LR said...

Here's how I see it. Chez didn't storm into his bosses office, throw his gate pass to the ground and yell "I've had enough of this corporate media bullshit".

He gladly went along with his corporate masters til they figured having a raving partisan posting on Huffpo might not look good for their already questionable "unbiased news source" issues.

He was fired. Not the other way around. So let's not have any of this "staying true to himself" crap. He gladly accepted a paycheck and standing that comes with being a CNN producer for as long as *they* wanted him. When you get fired unwillingly you lose all right to take a stand on your credibility as a do-gooder.

I don't wish Chez ill. I hope he makes a good and decent living doing what he loves. But I won't stand by and say a journo posting on a crazily partisan website in his or her off hours is acceptable. What's the difference in doing that and leading an NRA convention , or speaking at a NOW rally?

VOTAR said...

Indeed, lr, what is the difference (or the implied conflict)?

The conversations one has outside of the workplace -- be they about music, literature, humor, current events, history, religion, or (heaven forbid!) politics, be they verbal, literary, interpretive dance, maniacal street preaching, or otherwise -- are not, or at least should not be the purview of one's employer.

This situation seems to have a lot less to do with concern over partisan opinion and reputation (particularly when leveled at someone who went to great lengths never to represent himself as a spokesman for CNN or the corporation that owns it; in fact, Chez's deliberate lack of anonymity, coupled with the respect paid to the company by not identifying it, only amplifies the choice he made not to appear to be some disgruntled whistle-blowing insider undermining the efforts of his employer, an image he seems to have steadfastly avoided). It has everything to do with that corporation's subjugation of its hirelings, extending inappropriately into their off-hours avocations, hobbies, and conversations. Unless I'm misunderstanding all of this, my friend Chez was not fired for posting (for free) for Huffington and elsewhere, he was fired for not asking his boss permission first.

The internet simply doesn't work that way any more (if it ever did). And it seems the established network information distribution corporations aren't coming to grips with that fast enough. Instead, by this action, they demonstrate their lack of respect for the ability of intelligent people to make a simple distinction between what someone does for a few hours each day to earn a paycheck, and what they might be overheard discussing among friends at a dinner party.

There are those of us who are smart enough to recognize and appreciate the difference, and this frightens those who still think that tabloid swill like the Nancy Grace Horror Hour will be willingly sucked down like so much pabulum as a nutrition-free substitute for actual news.

Keep believing the CRAP you do.

One day you'll get it.

It's called "FREEDOM OF SPEECH"

CNN was never mentioned until after he got fired. No one ever knew where he worked so how could they be worried about how they would look?
Chez had nothing to do with them looking bad. That happened long before Chez even came into the picture.
It's a personal blog regarding his own personal opinions. Nothing to do with CNN. I would have collected a paycheck also.

Thanks for the laugh.

Anonymous said...

I was never really in touch with the term "smug" until I met you.

LR said...

To anonymous: "You're" not "your"

Votar: I disagree. Posting on an established (even on an unpaid basis) political website like Huffpo under your real name is an act of brazen partisanship being made very, very public. And as such is *technically* a fireable offense for a journalist. Blogs in general, and HuffPo in particular, aren't a conversation in Starbuck's with a buddy. It's a distinct and loud public megaphone.

Now, if I had been Chez's boss a talking to and stern request to stop blogging would have been my first order of business. Not firing.

But I don't know Chez. And as such I'm not privy to his work history and/or trouble he's had with bosses in the past. If he's had a spotless record on the job, then this is a drastic and extreme measure. But it's been my experience in newsrooms and TV stations in general that anything short of a shooting spree ON AIR is usually handled with a talking to or probation.

Anonymous said...

Pardon me if I'm wrong, but the news accounts I've read concerning the firing, indicate it was due to the postings on HuffPo...not here. True? And by the way, if you hadn't figured out where Chez worked, you really weren't trying.
