Hey CNN, you just lost a viewer.Cheers!
There is a message for you, Dr. Floyd. The message is: it is imperative that you leave orbit within two days.Something is going to happen.Something... wonderful.
I gave up on CNN long ago. You though, you just made my blogroll. Thanks for having a soul.
you are way to smart to be working in TV anyway and you know, "one door shuts, another doory opens" and you have way too much talent to be concerned, something way better will turn up for you, i'm sure.
Must be doing great things for your blog. I read about the firing on TPM and have read a lot of the content here because of that. Great stuff (the Oprah post is particularly inspired). Hang in there. I'd stop watching CNN on your behalf, but stopped months ago ... when it dawned on me that a bad day for Britney had the same headline value for them as hundreds of thousands of dead Iraqis. With luck you'll get a new position with an actual news organization.
SRSLY? Bit of a bummer, man. The part about health insurance and a steady paycheck. Not so much the part about having to wade through the waist-deep political bullshit every day. You know... there could be an upside — now you can punch Nancy Grace in the nose and not get fired... C'mon, you know you want to ;)Besides, isn't canning someone over a blog sort of passé? I mean, even grandma's have blogs these days and they're practically purpose-built for bitching about idiots. It's not your fault so many people at CNN fit the bill (and obviously felt very sensitive, embarrassed, and perhaps even a bit guilty). Anyhow, I bet Olberman would give you a job since he pretty much owns MSNBC now and he loves dissent (probably not so much within the ranks, but hey, it's worth a shot!)Give 'em hell, Chez. No compromise.
Well, if the number of people who hear about it and support you means anything, you're doing well. Best of luck.
I'd like to think that you either went out in Tyler Durden or Lester Burnham style. Even if you didn't, just tell us all you did.I give condolences, but I also have a feeling that it is for the best...most times it is.Cheers to unemployment (or severance pay)!
Ditto Thomas above about the paycheck and whatnot. There are plenty of options for you though. Have you considered pimping? Or working for John Stewart?
Chez ... you have been blessed with good karma. Now ... use your talents for the benefit of all.
I'm sorry Chez. Like Tyson needed Zoloft you needed this outlet and were worried it would get you in trouble and now it has. I'm guessing it was your take on the Chelsea Pimp thing (CNN has been called the Clinton News Network). Weather it was or wasn't we know it's become a terminatable offense to have an opinion. Some day a robot that takes every side of every issue and believes every religious doctrine equally will have your job and then they'll be happy. I'll save the blahs blahs about it being the best thing for you since I believe in the sky bully and voted for Bush so you will probably be more comforted if I said that you'll never recover from this and never look back at this as the best thing that's ever happened to you. I've been wrong all decade so fingerer's crossed.
it takes guts to tell it like it is and then sign your real name to it. you're an extremely talented producer and equally gifted writer. on a selfish note...could you please come back to your home in miami, and change the death star back into a pirate ship? help us obi-wan kenobi, you're our only hope.
WTF???? CNN, you bunch of gaseous assbags, you probably fired the one guy with a soul and a conscious who would even condescend to work for you. Screw you and the Satanistic gooberfucks who run your idiotic organization (I am looking at YOU Nancy Grace and Company!)Chez, rock on. You are way too good to sell your soul on a daily basis to these people anyway. Get a healthy fucking severance and walk away with a clean conscious. You will come out a better person in the end. You know it, we all know it, and we will back you up, my friend.
Democracy Now in New York said at the end of its broadcasts last week they were looking for a producer of some sort.
Did you really think the Communist News Network really believed in free speech? All content my be approved by der CNN propaganda machine - or else.Chez Pazienza, you found that out the hard way.
"I wanna introduce you to a personal friend of mine. This is an M41A pulse rifle. Ten millimeter with over-and-under thirty millimeter pump action grenade launcher."
How 'bout FOX. I think your Blog would go that much more fun to read. Sorry Chez, but like someone says above, when one door opens....P.S. you worked for CNN? Wow, I didn't know that :)
Insane, and yet so very believable. My condolences on the inconveniences this will cause but I have no doubt at all that you will move on to bigger and better things. Best of luck to you!
I'm sorry, Chez. Considering the now-public nature of your employment and dismissal and its link to your excellent writing here, though, I'd hope that a more appreciative and fulfilling job will come along soon. Here's to ya.
So much for free speech.
sorry to hear about the loss of the job. on the bright side means more time for you to write and play xbox.
I'm really sorry about the job loss--which sucks no matter how horrible the employer. Although, 1) I'm shocked! that you worked at CNN 2) You really were too smart to be working there 3)It took them this long to discover your brilliant blog? Frankly, if I didn't already hate CNN so much for employing Glenn Beck, Nancy Grace and Tom Foreman, I could say I hate them for what they did to you.You know better things are awaiting you. Good luck.
Somehow I feel that Oprah and Scientology are to blame...But, seriously: woah. Getting fired is no good; I'm hoping this will give you the inspiration and ignition to go in your own direction--a direction, I think, that very much deserves exploration.
Fuck 'em. Fuck 'em all. A "news" station fireing an employee because they voiced their own personal opinion, never named names, and went to great lengths to hide that employers name? I hope your lawyers have a field day with that, Chez.
Hey listen. Don't take any guff from these swine.
Sorry man. I got sucker-punch-fired from my last job. But, I'm at an awesome place now. Don't misunderstand, I'm definitely not one of those "things happen for a reason" people. I'm just sayin -- at the length, talent will out. Good luck.
which proves what total assholes they are. so what's next? [just another way the past year has sucked-because no matter how awful a job is,no mattter what egregious behavior THEY indulge in and encourage, for THEM to fire YOU, and not vice versa, leaves you bereft. and thinking, i should quit yesterday and pulled the rug from under them, rat fuck bastard that they are!
your shit's entirely too good to be wasted at CNN... You should be writing for Bill Maher
You will find something bigger and better... You are meant for so much more! ;)Kimberla
It's an Oprah Conspiracy...You're certainly a talented individual with a great voice and intellegent views on what's going on. Much bigger and better things are going to come your way. Stay in the fight, you had em' on the ropes.
Shit, Chez. I wish I had some wisdom, but this just sucks. Apparently we now live in a communist state.
so much for freedom of speech. glad you have that huffington post gig. and i second the comment about going to work for john stewart! :)
That's brutal. I agree with the majority here that your talent will take you to better places but still, no one likes to be fired. That said, I also agree with Manny. Make 'em pay, Chez. They deserve it.
CNN is nothing more than a desiccated carcass of a once decent news organization. Fark 'em. You'll land on your feet bud, count on it.
Aw, man! Fuck them. Fuck them right in the ear. With one of those giant, novelty dildos, no less.I'm awfully sorry, and know it must feel like a real blow to the stomach, but I agree you're much to good for them. Here's seconding (or thirding) suggestions to go to work for Olbermann, Maher, Stewart...hell, I bet you could pull of freelancing if you so wished. Go kick some ass and take some names.
Well, shit.I'm truly sorry man. That both sucks and blows. I hope things work out.As always, you know where to find me.
That's just wrong. At first I was all spitfire and vengeance but now I am just upset that you were let go for having a blog.It sucks man. I wish you the best and I hope those asshats get what is coming to them for their decision.
It think it's damn moronic for them to fire you over Deus Ex. I do believe you never mentioned who exactly you worked for, so if they thought for even a second that your blog reflected badly upon them as a soulless corporate monster, they're sadly mistaken. If it weren't for the fact that, up here in my part of Canada, the only alternative for getting my american politics fix is FOX, I'd stop watching CNN for your sake. But I'll settle for just seething in their general direction.Fucktards.Hopefully the severance pay will be something amazing.
Wait, So Nancy 'Mouth of the South' Grace can berate the mother of a missing child into suicide--with nary a batted eye from her superiors--but you get fired for...what? Did they have a problem with your coherent sentences? Wait, there's no time to answer that, Nancy's airing a 'Pretty Missing Blonde Skankwatch: Day 549: 'What YOU Did!' special tonight. And you know that the world needs her brand of double-banged, spider-lashed misanthropy more than ever. These are the ISSUES, man! For what it's worth, CNN is the 23-year-old high school senior who tries to make it with ninth-grade girls, while making D-Student FOX News look like a freaking Rhodes Scholar. Someone else will have to bear the burden of trying to work with integrity in that cesspool, take your rest. At any rate, do you really want to share a network with that corn-fed-she-wolf-troll-bitch-from-hell Grace, anyway? All the best in your future pursuits. - A Reader in Ontarioaka 'Soviet Canuck-i-stan'
Dude, I don't know who you are, but I just ran across your story on memeorandum.I know you must be bummed out losing your job and all, but if CNN fired you, you know you must be doing something right. Those Fucks can blow me!I'm working on starting my own media organization, and I'm looking for good people. So hit me back if you want to get in on the ground floor of a groundbreaking organization. Blogger Free Press (BFP) is our handle, and our goal is to squash the competition like cockroaches, and CNN is at the top of the list, preceded only by Fox. :-) Make a list of anyone else at CNN that's looking to get out of that dead-end rat-hole, which is soon to be out of business, and will see if we can make them an offer they can't refuse. Our motto is, WE GO EVERYWHERE, and we don't just report the news, WE TAKE A STAND.Hang in there my brother, the cavalry is on the way.
Does this mean that you're now free to post all the really juicy insider gossip?
What happened to freedom of speech? Did I blink and miss something? Oh wait.....we're talking about CNN. Duh!!....sorry.
Sorry, Chez. I'm just reading this now.If you and Jayne need anything (whether it's a cheap drink in Reading) call me.
Caught this on TV Newser. Sorry for the boot, but hey..CNN sucks..your probably better off..although it probably doesn't look like that now of course..Best of luck. You have some good stuff here..hope you don't stop writing.
Hey Chez,I've never left a comment before but I read your blog religiously. This is awful. I knew when Nancy Grace got a show that the network *should* be dead to me, but I kept watching for things like election results. Not anymore.
Chez, I'm very sorry to hear about the sack but as others have said, you are so talented that you will be scooped up quickly by someone who values your embracing of the new media. As far as I can tell from the press, you weren't even offered severance pay so my best wishes go out to you, Jayne, and the baby-to-be as you all weather what I suspect will be only a brief burp in your career.
This is going to sound selfish, but had you not been fired, I probably wouldn't have discovered your wonderful writing today. It sounds like you're now onto bigger and better things though. I wish you all the best.
I take it they didn't make you sign a non-disclosure agreement since they gave you no severance, right?Tear 'em apart.
That is ridiculous. I've been reading this blog for quite a while and never even knew for sure which network you worked for until now, so I can't understand why they would feel threatened by your blog. I hope things work out OK for you soon.
I reiterate what everyone else has said so far. So while I was sitting here thinking that your exposure on HuffPo was going to elevate your career it seems as thought it was a cause of the end of it... From TV Newser:A CNN insider tells TVNewser Pazienza was let go because, "he did not get permission to publish personal writings."So now you have to get permission to have personal writings? Or just the ones that express one's opinions about a competitors method of business (Shuster Post)? Or maybe it was one Suited up Douchebag (Capus) calling another (Walton) for a "favor". Well whatever it was Fuck em. While you never came out and said where you worked it wasn't hard to find out. Frankly, I'll blame Drew for putting you on the back of his book. Hahaha. (Just kidding Drew. Don't kill me!). Well now maybe you can get your book published and have some news person somewhere give you a "Thumbs Up" review that in turns starts thier own downward spiral at their place of employment. Wouldn't that be ironic. But most of all...you can get to what you do oh so well...Making of Mockery of Mockery. Banter on my friend. Banter on...
Fuck 'em.Yours is one of the few blogs I read on a daily basis -- from all the way across the world, in Australia. Sure, I don't understand half of the references to local TV news anchors and scandals about "nappy-headed hos", but I still check in every day.The gent up the thread's bang on. Talent will out.
Unless you referred to CNN directly in some sort of unflattering manner or they feel you revealed confidential info, not seeing how this is not an extremely stupid and assholish move on their part. Was it a noncompete thing (ie, blogging on Huffington Post)? If so, slightly more understandable, but still stupid. Sorry, dude.
Ain't that always the way? You are nice and snug for years and then they find that blog in your desk drawer and all hell breaks loose! Hooray for free speech! Oh, that's right, you have to be from another country to have any rights...how stupid of me.CNN blows anyway. Still, nothing like having the rug yanked out from under ya for no GOOD reason. Better things ahead my friend!D
Why does this sad bit of news not surprise me?As many here have already said I too gave up on CNN a long time ago. A once decent news organization did, at some point calve from the larger body of unbiased, informative journalism to become a pathetic mockery of what it once was - what it once represented. Now it too floats like a berg in a sea of mediocrity where it has become more of a hazard to those trying to navigate the septic, biased waters of agendas, half-truths and naked political partisanship in their search for truth and understanding in a world seemingly gone to rot.Chez, I only hope that this experience doesn't consume you and make you bitter. Rather, I hope it tempers you like steel and that you'll come out on the other side with an increased sense of resolve and integrity that your blog reflects.Good luck in all your endeavors and thank you for your email@example.com
YES. WE. CAN.
Hey Chez, Was so sorry to hear about all this this morning, but in any case way to go out in style. Looks like a lot of people got wind of this so hopefully the offers should be rolling in soon so you won't have have to be without steady income in that rent-sucking city for too long. In the meantime, keep up the good fight, hey?-Alison
So, I see Oprah made a little phonecall.....She's such a douche.Anyway, Chez, you'll get a better job and then you can tell us all how Anderson takes it up the poop-chute.*gasp* Oh NO I di'int!! Oh YES I did!!!!
this is awful news...getting fired is never a good thing, at least not immediatly...i hope you can make the best of it in the long run.
Chez - sorry man that's awful. Good luck. Give 'em hell. Find other work. Keep us posted
I actually just found your blog yesterday and tagged it and then I come back and this!?!? Gah.Screw. (as in 'damn'...)
Sorry bout the dismissal and best of luck.
You're better than them anyway. Go work someplace cool. You can use all of us an references.
Chez - Just found out about this through TK's blog. My company started blocking your site so I haven't been around for a while. Don't have much to offer but my condolences and to reiterate what many have said before. You are far too talented to be out of the game for too long. Good luck.
Your blog is one of the best ever.CNN obviously has their heads up their asses.Perhaps something good will come of it. You certainly are talented enough. Best wishes from Columbus, Ohio. From somebody you will never meet or know. From somebody who has laughed out loud at your writing. With deep respect.Jeff
You should probably file a lawsuit...
What they SHOULD have done is kicked one of their lame "stars" out and stuck you in front of a camera as the star of your own news commentary show. That would have been a better punishment than simply firing you.Let's face it, CNN has been making a lot of boneheaded choices recently.
Hey, I just wanted to add my voice to the supporters, well-wishers, and CNN belittlers who've already posted.I've read your blog for ages and never commented, but I thought I'd mention - I had no idea what news network you worked for until I saw the news on pajiba.com.So screw them.Best wishes to you in all your endeavours. If the other 50 times it's been said didn't do it for you, here's another: you are talented, you are thoughtful, you are funny, and you will move on to bigger and better things.Take heart and take care,~ dsbs
*blink* *blink*shitfuckdamnand wahooooooo toowhatever comes next I'm hoping you continue to challenge yourself and us along with you.staying tuned...
O captain my captain.
Ew ew ew. I've just read that in an e-mail, they wished you luck in your future endeavors, and I would like to take this moment to say I will never use that phrase again, I live in Canada and am totally unaffiliated with CNN.Ew.
I can't say I've watched any TV regularly in years, except for Lost and Heroes.Still, if I have to turn on the TV for news, it goes to CNN unless it's a local event I'm trying to tune into. I get all my news (NOT news) from Fark and here, anyway.Big loss for CNN, no big loss for Chez. GL on finding something else to do that I hope you enjoy!(If you'd like to try out the pro online poker player career, i'll hook you up with some deals on some sites ;) )
Ive been enjoying this site since the 'douchbag' post last year. in addition to seconding the condolences and talent comments that have gone before, can I ask an impertinent question? What the fuck were you doing a CNN ?? I've been calling that network rumor central since the first gulf war!!if you need anything, get a pay pal tip jar on the site. you have a loyal audience.
Sweet. You can't buy PR this good.I can totally see you doing the Tyler thing:Get the fuck out of here, you're fired!I have a better solution. You keep me on the payroll as an outside consultant and in exchange for my salary, my job will be never to tell people these things that I know. I don't even have to come into the office, I can do this job from home. That's so Chez.
Your superiors knew full well about this Blog, and they knew full well about Huffington Post, too. Instead of voicing concern they held it fast like a joker, waiting for the moment you became inconvenient to play their card. You know the real reason why, don't you? What reason is it that you recently became "inconvenient".
I got laid off (I know, I know, not quite the same thing) on January 15th, from a company I'd been with for over 6 years. It was the first time in my life that I'd been without a job, and it felt profoundly weird. It's a month later (nearly), and I just started a new job with a much smaller company and can say with complete honesty that the lay off was the best thing that may have ever happened to me. I'm considering sending my old HR department a Thank You card. So I won't give you the old cliche, but the sentiment is still there. *grin* Maybe you'll even get a chance to buy back some of your soul, though I suspect you may not get it back in the same shape you sold it.
Well, that totally blows the big one. Sorry to hear about getting canned because you felt like you could still be human. I'm eager to hear how things turn out legally for you, as this whole situation stinks of unjust termination. That, and I might have to keep a tighter lid on my own blog, seeing as I keep the same "no names" policy for my workplace. Was it the possible break from objectivity due to your name being associated with your blog? I guess that would have to come with the assumption that CNN still cares about being objective though...
Hunter S. Thompson was never more right: "The TV business is uglier than most things. It is normally perceived as some kind of cruel and shallow money trench through the heart of the journalism industry, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs, for no good reason."
I also write for on Huffpo and 23/6. I just tripped across your blog yesterday and will begin reading it daily. The Oprah stuff was brilliant. And hilarious. Getting fired blows. As does CNN for doing it. Fuck 'em. Fuck 'em in the ear. You're better off.
Chez, I'm so sorry. I know that you are way too good for that corporation, but as one who has been unemployed and insuranceless, best wishes to you. Fuck CNN.
Fuck. This sucks. I've been reading regularly for about 6 months and have been digging in the archives and I second (third? 61st?) everyone here who said that they had no idea where you actually worked. Good luck Chez.
Well, doesn't CNN just suck it.I'm sorry for their loss, Chez- and wish you all the best with a much better company.
There's no such thing as bad publicity. :)
Crappy No-Good Numbskulls. You can do better, Chez.Keep us informed, DEM is a delight to read.
Hey Chez - don't think I've ever commented on your blog before, but I'm an occasional commenter over at Pajiba. Hope you find new, gainful employment with a more understanding company soon. Have you looked into the possibility that a vengeful M. Night Shyamalamadingdong may be behind this in some way?
I thought you guys had this thing called "freedom of speech" there in the States... Well, I guess the great late Joe Strummer was right : "You have the right to free speech. As long as you're not dumb enough to actually try it" (The Clash: Know Your Rights)
I find it amazing that CNN ( the media ) is violating someone "FREEDOM OF SPEECH".If you didn't sign a non-disclosure, take em down. You are too talented to waste your time with a shit hole like CNN. I read the book and your just too talented. Hey, you should start writing for the "WHITE HOUSE". Maybe then someone over there will say something intelligent. I guess the sarcasm runs in the family!!! Hey CNN "FREEDOM OF SPEECH"...
Good luck to you. It's a damn shame when a company doesn't recognize the talent sitting right in front of them.
Ai yi...Well that's their loss, I suppose. You certainly have too much going for you to not bounce out of this... well, not on top, but more like three steps above on top. Your pen is certainly mightier than what they had to offer you.
...does CNN even know what they gave up?schmucks.good vibes to you, man.
Damn the man. You are rad. Keep up the amazing stuff.
But who will be their go-to guy for obscure musical footnotes like Led Zeppelin?Seriously. That's horrible. But you are a smart talented guy and I have to believe something better is right around the corner for you.
DAMM CHEZ.....I'M PISSED!!!!!!!!!WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO OUR RIGHT TO "FREEDOM OF FUCKING SPEECH"??????TAKE EM DOWN CHEZ!!!!!!! TAKE EM DOWN...WALK SOFTLY BUT CARRY THE ALMIGHTY PEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!CAN EVERYONE PLEASE EMAIL CNN WITH HOW YOU FEEL LIKE I DID???YOU GOT KNOCKED DOWN BUT YOUR FAR FROM OUT OF THE FIGHT. YOU ARE JUST TOOOOO GOOD A WRITER AND EVEN THOUGH THE TIMING IS BAD, YOU'LL BE HIGHER THAN YOU'VE EVER BEEN BEFORE. THEN JUST TELL CNN TO REACH UP AND KISS YOUR ALMIGHTY ASS....IF YOU AND JAYNE NEED Z OR I, YOU KNOW THE NUMBER.
One more reason not to watch CNN.Seriously, why fire someone for what they write, as long as it isn't affecting job performance job? You'd think an employer would be happy to know their employees have an outlet that doesn't involve firearms.Given the intelligence and clarity with which you write, wherever you land I'm sure it will be on your feet.
Keep up the good work...don't let the man keep you down!
Just found you today, via Ed Cone's blog. As long as CNN is willing to write a paycheck to Dobbs or Beck, it is clear to me that they lack integrity anyway. I'll be reading you daily, plus catching up on your archive. Success is the best revenge. You should find it, judging by what I've seen so far and the comments from your long-term readers.
The blogosphere is behind you man. We will publicize this. The corporate media structure has got to realize that blogging is just as viable an alternative to reporting as the traditional journalism. The millions of readers everyday should testify to that. I am sure more blogs are read everyday than people are watching programs of Wolf Blitzer. I don't have the data, but the numbers are there. Keep it up and keep us informed.
Chez-Been a big fan ever since the "Douchebags" post. Even after the past 11 months in Iraq (only 4 left!), DEM and Fark are the only websites I check every day (with the occasional exception for being "out of town" of course). All these comments from we the fans prove that this is CNN's loss and not yours. You have far too much wit, intelligence, and brutal honesty to be wasting your time at the Communist News Network, and I have no doubt that you will find greater success elsewhere.Don't stop speaking the truth, and don't lose any sleep over those clowns. We love you man.-Cap'n Dan.
I'd never seen this excellent blog before.Judging from the solidarity and volume of comments, you have a heck of a lotta support from across the world.By blogging about what happened ironically may turn out to be one of your most widely read/discussed postings !!What does that tell you....Best wishes
That sauce is weak. I would stop watching CNN, just like everyone else who has commented, if I ever watched it in the first place.
So, let me get this straight. CNN has a policy about having personal writings approved internally before publication, and your Blog violates that policy. Thus, they are within their rights to terminate you without severance. But why would they? You have two Emmys, a Golden Mic, and a cult following on the internet, and CNN can't see how to best use this to their advantage? Seems a very short-sighted thing for them to do.I started reading your blog within the past year after linking here from Jayne's site. I always wondered where you worked. Despite any concern CNN may have had to the contrary, it was not evident at all in any of your writings. So, now I'm feeling good about the fact that we primarily watch MSNBC where I work (which I will not mention for fear of meeting a similar fate), and will not bother tuning into CNN, since they feel their policies are more important than keeping talented individuals on staff.
I just heard. I’m shocked that a “media outlet” that is protected by the 1st amendment, the very one that guarantees free speech as well as freedom of the press, fires one of their employees for practicing that very same right to which he is also entitled. Technically, are/were you not a member of the press?Fuck ‘em if they can’t take a joke. I will send a letter to CNN and complain. I vow to never watch HNN, TBS, TNT, CNN, etc. Actually, I can’t stand Larry King anyways. (Paint your bald spot?) I am canceling our “Time” subscription and getting rid of AOL. (Oh, wait… I stopped paying for that piece of shit a decade ago!) Chez, my old friend, I’ve known you since we’re 14. You are way too intelligent and talented to not bounce back from this; most likely ending up in a better place. If you need anything, just let me know. You got my info, and I got your back. A.J. Balboa
I'm a little late to the party, but I've been reading your blog for about a year and I just wanted to throw my best wishes on the pile. You do great work and you'll come out on top no matter what shakes out.The only real loser is CNN...
That's so weird. It's like they hired you to work for them or something.
Making a mockery of mockery......and overhyped news agancies!COD4 - what would Cpt. Price do?
CNN is just more pretentious Fox News. Same terrible taste, less pandering calories. You can and will do better.
What a bunch of crap..you're too good for those monkeys anyway...to hell with them.
It's not like anybody actual watches American Morning anyway..or CNN...
I'm sorry, but what did you think was going to happen? For a network television news producer to blog openly about their polticial views (sometimes) isn't very smart. No one says you can't have the views, but the pervasive nature of the internet means it's out there forever. If you were a columnist or a poltical commentator, that'd be one thing. But, how can you pretend to cover the news without bias while ranting openly on someone's blog? However, I love the line, "Hollywood hasn't stopped trying to convince me that Sarah Jessica Parker is attractive." That's rich. And, oh so true.
Good luck with whatever you choose to do about this.I added your blog to my blog's links.Congrats on the baby as well.
No good deed goes unpunished. CONGRATULATIONS!!! Aside from the obvious sucky fact that a single income in NYC blows. Hey, here’s a positive thought - maybe you can get a job that doesn't require you to get up at 3am? (How did you do it for so long?) Maybe you can produce some children's programming. (hee-hee!) Maybe you can write for a living because you obviously have the talent and quite a following. Can you get paid to blog? As much as you may hate the job, it just never feels good to be fired, so I truly am sorry. Commiserations and congratulations are in order. And in that order too.We are thinking of you back here in Atlanta – where the nightmare began. Hugs
Best of luck to you. I do hope that you pursue this matter sufficiently to draw news attention to the situation. This is a deeply disturbing move by CNN and the spotlight should be on them.I'm sure the extra attention for you wouldn't hurt either depending on what you want to pursue next.
You're a sad, pathetic joke.
I am happier than ever that I decided to abandon CNN for MSNBC. CNN is getting over-populated with (to use a scientific term) dweebs. Best wishes on your future plans.
To all the folks here who say his freedom of speech has been violated: Get a life. He's perfectly free to keep on speaking. He just won't be doing it in a manner that reflects on CNN.I'm sure he knows deep down as a professional--if he attended journalism school--that he couldn't be writing what he was writing and be in the news business. He can go ahead and sue--and lose. CNN has every right to expect its employees to not engage in conduct that will damage its product. (Try this thought experiment: You are running a news network, and you learn that one of your reporters/producers writes a blog in which he has been attacking Obama in racist language. Are you telling me you aren't going to fire him just because he does this on his off hours and his free speech rights allow him to do so?)-- Someone with 30 plus years in the news business
I can't resist. I just LOVE thought experiments: Of course I would NOT presume that hiring a talented writer who more than adequately produces good (read: "ostensibly informative") content for my network during business hours under my roof, logically extends into the realm of controlling, dominating, or even attempting to influence, any other avocation he or she may take (for free), using his or her spare time, that might involve him or her expressing the occasional political commentary, music review, personal anecdote......or satirical humour, which might perhaps borrow and personalize material from other well-known humorists like, say, a brilliant young African-American comedian named Dave Chapelle......whether or not some people who might read said satirical humour might be too dense, or out of touch with popular culture, to get the fucking joke, and reach absurd, over-arching, and unresearched conclusions. No, sir. I definitely would not behave that way at all. That's the ignorant rationalization of Dickensian turn-of-the-19th-century sweat shop mentality. Welcome to the internet, CNN.--Someone with 42 years of walking upright with a brain in my skull cavity.
How absurd! What happened to freedom of speech?? I have been reading your blog for a while and had no idea which network/news organization you were with.Since when can employers get away with stuff like this?? Not being allowed to write what you want on a personal blog?
Sucks, man. But i'm sure Arianna can hook you up with something even better. Good riddance to bad rubbish.I just sent this letter to CNN. Probably trying to empty the ocean with a teacup, but i had to say *something*.-----Congratulations, CNN. You've managed to erase whatever delusions I used to harbor about you being one of the last semi respectable news networks. That's great, you see, because hope is so time consuming. Nihlism is easier, takes less effort. I have long been a detractor of Fox for less than objective reporting, and think that USA today tends a bit towards the sensationalist side. I very rarely watch the news, due to my schedule, and more often than not, get my news from your website. I had previously prided your network on responsibility, objectivity, and reasonably thorough reporting. Now I know I needen't have bothered. It comes to my attention that you have let go a gentleman named Chez Pazienza. I am not a personal friend of his. I have spoken with him on a handful occasions, and consider him to be intelligent, and reasonably amusing. I suspect that were we to socialize, we'd get along well, but I have no personal energies invested in either his success or his failure. So this letter is not an ignorant, uneducated, "You jerks, you fired my buddy, you stink!" letter. No, I am only familiar with him for the same reason that you canned him. His blog-column, "Deus Ex Malcontent". And I have to ask- what in blazes are you people thinking? Not only are you teetering dangerously on the edge of eroding the very freedoms you as journalists operate under, the unalienable rights to freedom of speech and expression, but you may have just lost one of the few people on your team that actually still cherishes and fights to keep alive honesty, intelligence, relevance, and integrity in network news. What? Were his occasionally detrimental remarks towards various networks he's been employed at, yours included, a sign of "not being a team player"? Need he drink the Kool-aid for you to consider him an asset? Perhaps, instead of firing him for making the critical mistake of having a brain, a conscience, and a soul, you could have used those traits to improve and refine the very systems he was not poking, but pointing out the holes in.In the time that I have been enjoying his column, I have never known him to needlessly fling around negativity for the sake of throwing a tantrum to make himself feel better about something. If he has something defamatory to say on a subject, it is because he believes that it can, and should, be improved. You at CNN have lost a major fire for productivity and positive change. You have thoughtlessly discarded a bright and passionate man with multiple Emmys, who could have been a benefit to your team. In your closed-minded ignorance, you wasted an opportunity to address the various issues he had brought up in his "personal writings". I'm certain that if asked, Chez would have been more than willing to work WITH you, rather than against you, in bettering your content and practices. And in the process, you've become the very punchline to the joke he had been trying to make.
""I wake up every morning baffled as to why America hasn't thrown George Bush and Dick Cheney in prison.""Ror the same reason we haven't thrown your silly rear-end in prison.Because we are a great country, and most of us respect our leaders even when we disagree with them, and we tolerate loonies like you who give aid and comfort to our enemies. "I wake up every morning baffled as to why Al queda hasn't given you an award for excellence".There, I fixed it for you. Summary? You should have NO PROBLEM GETTING A JOB WITH AL JAZEERA.
CNN?, does anyone actually watch that stuff?, I guess they do...anyway, sorry to hear that you lost your job. Great blog, you're sure to find success elsewhere.
editor,The reason one might want to conjure to justify throwing this author into prison, versus the demonstrable reasons that already exist for prosecuting actual known criminals, are quite different indeed.
to editor; After thirty years in the business, you surely have worked under an editor who reviewed your work and-- well-- edited it for content, style, grammar, and bias.If your media outlet were publishing your work as its content without attribution to you, then your editor must have gleaned it for any trace of your bias. If Chez produced "product" for CNN that went on air containing Chez' bias or point of view, then fire the fucking editor! If the producer is producing each segment in conformity with his or her editor's rules and requirements, why would the editor care about the producer's character, bias, point of view, race, religion, sexual preference, mating habits, drinking habits, hair style, nerdiness, or other such matters? If CNN fired him because he is a fuck up or an office prick, then Chez has no beef with CNN. But, if they fired him for the content of his blog, and cannot cite any incidence of the content of the blog affecting his work product, then he has a beef--- a big one.I do not know you, editor. My personal impression from your two comments on this post is that you believe that your thirty years in the media has vested you with a certain grace supposedly earned by your adherence to immutable journalistic "principles." Chez cannot enter such state of grace becasue of his display of partisanship or bias outside his job. You wouldn't happen to be a Jesuit, would you?
That's quite a surprise attack. No warning at all.Freedom of speech? what's that? You never gave away your place of employment. Well, that is... until you lost it.I have no doubt you will find a new place of employment soon enough, if you haven't already. Thanks for the great writings, and keep it up.
Hey, 30 yrs plus in the business!!!TRY AND STICK AROUND FOR ANOTHER 30 YRS. YOU MIGHT ACTUALLY LEARN SOMETHING.
Wow. tough call. Who is the bigger moron, you or most of the commentators? Especially to those confused about free speech. Perhaps you could do a follow up on how your blog was removed from the internet? Or how you were thrown in prison for it. So you were a producer for a major news outlet who made sure your far left-moveon biases were documented in your blog and you wonder why you were fired? How exactly can anyone view anything you produced with the expectation it isn't slanted sharply to the left. The only surprise is why did it take so long to get rid of you.
"WHat happened to Freedom of Speech???"Read the Bill of Rights. "Freedom of Speech" means the right to peacefully protest and demand redress of grievances from the US government. CNN, though f'king huge, is not the US government. "Freedom of Speech" is why Code Pink can stand outside that Marine recruiting station in Berkeley and call the recruiters names w/o the recruiters stepping out and gunning them down."Can an employer DO that?" shrug depends on how Chez's contract with CNN is worded. Imus got a huge *undisclosed* settlement from CBS because he had a "one-free-bite" clause in his contract that CBS forgot about. Barring some arbitration clause with him or his union (if any), CNN can fire him pretty much as it pleases except as protected under Title VII.
Wow, Chez: you know when you're drawing the ire of people who use 'moveon' as an insult, you've really hit the mainstream...
Chez,Having read only the comments up to this point (head in the sand for two days, I guess), I can add no informed opinions.I CAN say that I'm not surprised, that I never knew that CNN was your employer, that I recall no specific slams against CNN, that I've always enjoyed this blog, that I've never been a big fan of CNN, and that cream rises. You will be fine, and probably will thrive from this. You can't buy better publicity, and if anyone comes out of this smelling like a rose it will be you, not your ex-employer.Cheers to you and Miss Jayne, and to the new -- BABY?! Where the hell have I been? Congratulations, and KEEP WRITING.Your reader and fan,Laurie
I have been quitely lurking here for a year. Sometimes nodding my head in agreement. Sometimes thinking your argument might be a little off. Always enjoying myself. Impressed with your wit and writing. Wondering how you maintained integrity in the sea you were swimming in, and thinking I probably joined you in a lifeboat on an almost daily basis. For what it's worth, you have the support of a thirtysomething Midwestern mother and professional. I will keep coming back. I don't see you sinking.Pattie
Your blog is consistently this household's favorite read while CNN has got to be one of the most inane "news" sources (short of Fox News), cable or otherwise. Ill informed, barely articulate, talking heads reciting poorly written copy through shellacked lips is not news, it's half assed infotainment.Sorry to bash the multi-national which provided the proverbial bacon for your family in the past, but I think you're in for a much bigger and brighter future.
" Anonymous said... Are you telling me you aren't going to fire him just because he does this on his off hours and his free speech rights allow him to do so?)-- Someone with 30 plus years in the news business6:08 PM"It's so cute that Jon Klein took time from his busy day of firing any number of other qualified people from CNN, to prove that his little penis isn't so little in his little mind, to post this ridiculous message on your board. He fancies that he has 30 plus years in the business but the math doesn't work out. Oh and if you go search around Klein also posts on Jossip, TVNewser, CNN reporter, ICN and many other blogs. So tell me why is it different when he does it?Please write a book and tell every sordid story of the sneaky underhanded shit that Klein is involved in.
This action reflects a common tendency among corporates to assert ownership over the employees 24/7. When I worked for IBM, the same sorts of policies were in place....though not enforced unless you were negative about IBM or an IBM customer (pretty much every large company....) and talking politics was also not a good idea if you were chasing government contracts. This chilling influence on all discourse should be resisted. They don't own you.
Did you know that "crisis" means "opportunity" in other cultures? This could be the start of something new, something more challenging and perhaps, more uncomfortable for awhile, but hey! This is the danger of being alive! All my best wishes from Argentina!Luis
Just found you via a link at Wonkette. Hard to believe. Good luck to you. Looking forward to reading your blog...
