"If You Can't Do Something Smart, Do Something Right"

"This is what they feared... and they were right to fear... because there's a whole universe of folk who are gonna know it too. They're gonna see it. Somebody has to speak... So no more running. I aim to misbehave."

-- Captain Malcolm Reynolds

Yes, the above reference is strictly for the nice people who've been reading for months (and because there's a Firefly marathon on Sci-Fi today).

Consider this a commercial.

Later today, I'll be telling my side of the fired-from-CNN story in detail -- so feel free to check back in this evening.

"Yes."

New reader here, but I can't wait to read your story about CNN. I used to love watching American Morning with Roberts and Chetry but since your posting last week I just seethe when I click past it. Morons.

I remember the day very well. I was teaching at a failing NYC school. The principal; deluded, paranoid, but worse then that, lazy; had succeeded in tearing down what had become a pretty good place for a poor kid to get up and out. The final stage of the grand plan was to implement a discipline policy which succeeded only in screwing students (3-day suspensions for tardiness to class, etc.), and eroding the bonds of advocacy we, as teachers, had tried to build.

So i am on my way down to a meeting with the principal about my various criminal activities: sheltering students who would otherwise be marked late and given suspension; telling wandering deans to get out of my classroom; etc.
My union rep is in my ear laying out how prudent of me it would be to play into their system. Apologize.

I just looked at him (knowing the road would lead to firing) and said, No. I can't do it anymore. Fuck them.

Well, they didn't fire me, but i did leave. Can't go on in the madhouse for long without becoming a little mad oneself.

Fuck 'em, Chez. You must have been doing something right, I say.

Not even a big hoard of terrifying space monkeys could keep me from hearing your tale! Not a browncoat alive who can resist an, "insufferable wise-ass"... Sue

Sweet. Since you've barely mentioned a specific thing about them and they got their knickers knotted, I'm certain you've got some real dirt. How kind of them to give you reason to share it with the world. Bastards.

Chez,

I'm guessing your blog traffic has tripled (more?) since the CNN story/blog story broke. Proud to say I was visiting waaaaaaay before the recent news.

Firefly

One of the best shows on TV, but it didn't even get to air for a full season before it was canceled, and why?

Because the powers that be determined that the values it promoted like questioning authority and being truly free and living your life the way you want are dangerous ideas that young people should not be exposed to, so it was shut down by the soulless swine at Fox.

Some of the best cleanest writing on television, coupled with good direction and excellent acting, God forbid the American people should actually be exposed to quality entertainment. It's true what they say, good things never last.

This is the last season of The Wire, by far the most realistic portrayal of the police, city government, the drug world, the collapse of the working class economy, and our inner-city school systems, that anyone has ever had the guts to put on TV. There's more truth in that show then you'll ever see in the news.

Of course hardly anyone has seen that show, relatively speaking, because it's on HBO, and as we all know cable and pay TV stations are for the privileged class, or those who have the capability and the lack of compunction to steal it.

Information and the truth is a commodity in America, and the people who control it want to make you pay dearly for it.

Another great show with fabulous writing, Denis Leary's Rescue Me on FX.

I feel sad and helpless. I was very busy in 2002-3 in theatre and missed the tv showing of firefly. When the movie came out, I hadn't a clue of how great it would be. I rented it and was hungry for more. I heard from a friend that there had been a series. "What, I have gotta see this!" So I bought it and I loved instantly. All the episodes are fantasticly written. All of the performances are great. The lines are perfectly timed. I became passionately involved in see a continuance of movies and/or the series. I seem to just have come in after the whole movement has started to die. I want more!!! I wish there was a fund or every fan could convince another movie out of them, but that has already been done. Jeez! Dispairaging. What to do now? Perhaps if a script were written and submitted that could convince a "second go". It would have to be from someone smarter and more creative than me. Please, I hear people, even now, who are just discovering the gem that is firefly, and are waking up.
